00:00Political analyst Dr. Winford James is not impressed by the PNM's walkout from Parliament,
00:06saying the move is more symbolic than substantive and does nothing to advance the country's
00:12interests.
00:13On Friday, opposition members left the chamber in protest, accusing the Speaker and government
00:18MPs of prejudicial and unfair treatment.
00:22The party says the Speaker has failed to act impartially and uphold the constitution and
00:27standing orders, declaring enough is enough.
00:30Political chatter, isn't it? Political chatter. The PNM has to find something to say. And if
00:38they can't find something with the real content, they will invent it. The question is how does
00:45the country benefit from that kind of behaviour? We have just moved from one government to another,
00:51right? We have just done that. And the PNM having very little to say invents something
01:02that they believe that will, you know, put them in good light, politically speaking.
01:07According to Dr. James, the PNM believes it is the only party with the knowledge, experience
01:13and competence to properly govern the country's affairs.
01:17It's going nowhere. It's not the kind of politics that can transform the country. It's more of the
01:24the same, right? There is a certain self-righteousness the PNM has, by the way. And they are using
01:31that self-righteousness to suggest to us all that they are the ones who know how to run the country.
01:39Yes? But look at the issues that they are using to indicate that they can run the country better
01:45than everybody else. We don't, I don't see anything that they say, any issue that they have embraced that
01:54improves our understanding of how this country must be governed.
01:58The PNM says parliament has become one-sided with the speaker overlooking government behaviour
02:05while quickly silencing the opposition. They argue this undermines fair debate and accountability.
02:11Speaking with TV6 via telephone, Dr. James says there is always bias and he explains why.
02:18There's always bias. It depends on what you want to focus on. But once you belong to a political side,
02:27you will have bias. And the other side will have a bias against you too. There's always bias.
02:34To ask if there is bias is to, you know, ask questions, ask answers. I don't know anything,
02:43any issue that the opposition has raised or the UNC has raised. I don't know any issue that has been
02:52raised without the bias of the particular political side. Nicole M. Romany, TV6 News.
