00:00Many quarters have been abuzz following the selection of Energy Minister Stuart Young
00:06to succeed Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley as Prime Minister upon his retirement.
00:11On Tuesday, former Minister of Public Utilities Robert Le Hunt told TV6
00:17while the party's constitution allows for this process of succession,
00:22there were other options available to Dr Keith Rowley.
00:27He explained that the highest body in the PNM's constitution
00:31regarding decision-making would be a convention,
00:34with the second highest body being the General Council.
00:56However, he said, the Prime Minister is a very deliberate person
01:12and this decision would have been something he planned out.
01:16He added that only on election night will it show if this decision was good or bad.
01:23He stressed that his main concern was the approach adopted
01:27in appointing Minister Young to replace Dr Rowley.
01:52There has been speculation that Mr Le Hunt wants to be the one leading the PNM.
02:05However, he says, if people believe he is Prime Minister material,
02:09he's honoured to know they hold him in such high esteem.
02:13But his only desire is to serve the people.
02:23So serving will always be there.
02:25As for aspirations as to run for the leader or be the Prime Minister,
02:30I must say those are not aspirations that I think about myself.
02:34I think about doing the work and serving the people
02:37and helping the communities that I live in.
02:41With regard to the state of emergency and the crime situation,
02:45Le Hunt laments the state of crime, saying it has reached a new level.
02:51He believes the general population is feeling desperate
02:55and is glad the government is taking action.
02:58To have a curfew during carnival, I think everyone would have thought that was unthinkable.
03:04Us giving up our carnival, our freedom around this time.
03:09But I'm almost sure if you run a survey, you might have even gotten people,
03:14if the intelligence and the leadership felt that that was necessary,
03:19people would have said, are taking a skip for carnival?
03:23All right, give me a curfew also.
