00:00What's going on? Justin Valentine with Motor City Sports Talk, The Roar. We are with our
00:04friends at Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network. We are at Belleville High School.
00:08You know who this guy is. Four-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro,
00:12former wide receiver for the Detroit Lions. Mr. Herman Moore, how are you doing today, sir?
00:15Hey, I'm wonderful. Thank you. So, you're partnering with our friends at Detroit Wayne
00:19Health Integrated Network. Talking to them here, you're at eCourse yesterday.
00:23You're at Belleville today. Talk about the impact that you want to have on these
00:28high school athletes and how important it is to talk about the message of mental
00:32health. I mean, you're talking social media. You're talking your brand.
00:36Talking to these guys who hope to get to the next level, right? Yeah, absolutely.
00:40So, it's an opportunity that was given to me by D. Wynn and having the opportunity
00:44to come out into the county and to go through Wayne County to talk to the schools,
00:48have the opportunity to speak with the athletic directors, the coaches, the players,
00:52and talk to them about something that's really important for us, and that is our mental well-being,
00:55our mental health. A lot of people don't realize you've got to put just as much into that
01:00as you do into your physical and nutritional health, but it's one of those things that keeps
01:04us going, and to be here and to be able to have that one-on-one, and that type of a vulnerable
01:09dialogue with student-athletes is tough, but they give us the attention.
01:14Social media is one of the things you guys talked about. That's not something you dealt with when you
01:17were a player, right? What type of message are you trying to get through to them when it comes to
01:21social media specifically as they, again, hope to get to the next level?
01:25Well, when we talk about social media, we talk about not only the mental wellness effect that
01:30it has on you, but also how much time do you consume with it, and is that healthier or not?
01:34And then also, if you use it, how are you utilizing it? And what would you do,
01:39and how do you react to it if your name is mentioned? Because I try and tell the kids,
01:43we're brands. And I try and get them to look at themselves as brands, because if you do now,
01:48you interact with it totally different. You interact with social media. You interact with
01:52the way you carry yourself a little bit differently. So that's really what we talk about when we talk
01:56about social media.
01:57So you guys used examples of, and we'll focus on the athletes, right, that's had situations,
02:02Ja Morant, Kyrie Irving, situations like that. How do you use situations like that,
02:08and what type of lesson are you trying to teach these kids about those situations when it could be,
02:13again, them in that spotlight?
02:14When we talk about some of the entertainers or the professional athletes, we use them as examples
02:19because we know those are figures that the kids will identify with. They're bigger than life.
02:23They're global. And because of the impact of what they have on their mindset and also on the ability
02:29to be impressionable, we like to know what do they think about their behavior, you know,
02:33and do they approve of it? And if they saw it, how would you do something different if you were
02:38placed in that situation? These are the real questions you ask them because these are real-life
02:42situations that they're going to be faced with.
02:44Let's have some fun a little bit because, again, former Detroit Lion, of course.
02:47Our Detroit Lions are in the national media a lot lately. There's a lot of hope for next season.
02:53There's a Super Bowl contender actually legitimately being talked about this time.
02:58How do you feel? Are you one of these years where it's don't be optimistic just yet,
03:03or is there legit reason to be optimistic about this team?
03:06I think there's a legit reason to be optimistic about them. First, starting with the postseason
03:11play, because I really believe the Lions are the frontrunners to win the NFC North division.
03:17Doing that gives you a spot into the playoffs, which the Lions haven't been in a while.
03:20But if they do that, that's the first step. And then the next one is, can they defeat any of those
03:25teams that they may face? I think the answer to that is yes, they can. So if you do that, I think it's
03:30legit to think, as long as things have to go well, they have to stay healthy, players have to perform,
03:36and if they do those things, I think it can line up right. I looked at 11-6.
03:41You know, anyone ever want to know, they ever want to know what I think, I think they finished
03:45the season 11-6, but I think they get into postseason play, and they get an opportunity
03:48to move on. You got a lot of primetime games in there. You got the Chiefs on opening night.
03:52I mean, those are tough games to win. So 11-6 is probably realistic, but again, still winning the
03:56division, getting yourself in. Let's have some fun. Again, mention four-time Pro Bowler,
04:01three-time All-Pro. How well do you know your own stats? I mean, you were listing them off earlier.
04:07I know some that are relevant that help put money in my pocket.
04:11All right. So the important one, okay, so you might get these. You mentioned you're a four-time
04:17Pro Bowler. You did that four straight years. What year did that run start, and what year did that run end?
04:21Uh, 94 through 97? 98.
04:31Nope, 97.
04:3297?
04:3397. Stick with your gut. First answer, right?
04:35All right, here's one more. You set career highs for both catches and touchdowns in 1995.
04:40How many catches, how many touchdowns did you have?
04:42Oh, that's easy. 14 touchdowns, 123 catches. Hey, 1,686 yards. That's money. That's money.
04:50I was going to say, that made them money. That's money.
04:52That made them money. I know money.
04:54All right, so real quick, we got one more surprise for you. Listen, shout out to my father, who was a
05:00big fan of yours. Went to 1994 training camp. Snap this picture of you. Look at that.
05:06Look at that. Oh, hey, you can't see it, but look at them guns. Hey, that's before I had a concealed
05:12weapon permit. Look at that. That's when he started to make the money. I looked like I was
05:19working out because I really wanted to have a contract. Hey, yeah. That was the first of four
05:23Pro Bowl seasons. But it didn't work. You could tell it was coming. Yeah, man, let's see. That was
05:26probably, yeah, that might have been that 1995. That's that 123, 1,686 yards and 14 touchdowns.
05:35Let's just redo that one more time. There it is, one more time. I just got to make sure you
05:37understand. One more time. You know what this man did. Just got to, hey, if you don't know your own
05:43history, all right, if I can't tell it, I can't expect other people to remember it. So there it is.
05:48And now he is bringing it to what could be the next community doing just that with Detroit
05:53Wayne Integrated Health Network. Be more than your sport here at Belleville High School.
