00:00So this cup of joy is about a proud dad moment
00:05And I happen to be the proud dad as the subject of the cup of joy
00:09Oh boy
00:11McKinley just turned three, my daughter
00:13She's such a superstar
00:16However, her birthday happened to fall on the same day as her swim lesson
00:22McKinley does not like swim lessons
00:25She's been struggling in the pool quite a bit
00:28So I was dreading the fact that on her birthday
00:33We were going to have to go to swim lessons
00:35But I decided because she takes swim lessons with one of our neighbors
00:39Her best friend Tally
00:40That I would call it a swim party
00:42We're having a swim party
00:44This is the beauty of toddlers
00:46All you have to do is reframe it
00:48And what a great lesson for us in life anyway
00:51Just reframe the problem to turn it into something a little more palatable
00:56Great idea
00:57Asking all these questions
00:58Well, so it's not swim lessons
01:01And I'm like, well, it's at the same pool
01:03And she goes, okay
01:04And I said, and the instructors will be there
01:06Okay
01:07So, you know, I didn't want to lie to her
01:08But you're right, Andy
01:10Reframing it on a more positive light
01:11Never hurt nobody
01:12Right, and they're there to celebrate you, McKinley
01:14It's all about celebrating you
01:16Last week when we were on vacation
01:18We stayed at a hotel with a pool
01:20And in planning way ahead
01:22I said, okay, dad and McKinley are going to go into the pool
01:26And we're going to do a swim lesson just the two of us
01:28Now, this is going to be a little silly
01:31But I didn't learn how to swim until I was 13
01:34Not being funny, right?
01:36And I dreaded getting in the water
01:38Yeah
01:38So swimming with her and teaching her how to do this is torture
01:42Because I'm like, I feel you, dude
01:44I don't want to
01:45I wouldn't want to learn either
01:46I never wanted to learn
01:47I always got ear infections
01:48I had ear problems my whole life
01:50So teaching her how to swim
01:52I was like, I dread doing this
01:54However
01:56It's been very therapeutic for me
01:58Watching her learn
01:59Because at her swim lesson
02:01I like to think partially because
02:03The dad McKinley swim lesson
02:05She was a rock star
02:09Last time she would barely sit on the stairs
02:12She was crying the whole time
02:13It was miserable
02:14Emily and I were devastated on the side
02:17You know, she swims to the instructor
02:18Not with us
02:19And this time she jumped in the pool five times
02:22Oh my gosh
02:23She was moving around
02:24She was having so much fun
02:26She got a little emotional
02:28But then she got right back into it
02:30And I'm just so
02:31It was such a proud dad moment
02:33And for something that was so
02:35Such a source of contention in my childhood
02:38Getting in the pool
02:38I hated it
02:39Never wanted to do it
02:40Hated going to pool parties
02:41Didn't want to do that
02:42I was embarrassed about not knowing how to swim
02:45I'm like so
02:46Even more proud
02:47Because she's conquering something
02:48I could not conquer as a kid
02:50It's so special
02:51I mean, Andy
02:52Isn't that the greatest feeling?
02:53It is
02:54It is
02:54But I give you so much credit for
02:57Again, like reframing this
02:58Because she went to this lesson then
03:01As the star
03:02Right
03:03Right?
03:03Like she went in there with a lot more confidence
03:05Than she usually does
03:06Because you just made that little switch in her mind
03:09That this was for her
03:11Not happening to her
03:13It was happening for her
03:14Like, again
03:16We can all learn from this lesson
03:18That you just taught us
03:19Dad, way to go
03:20Aw, thanks, Sums
03:24You're such a good dad
03:25Aw, stop it
03:27You're making me blush over here, dude
03:29My gosh, seriously
03:30That was just such a great life lesson
03:32I'm so proud of you
03:33Aw, thanks
03:34Well, I learned from the best
03:35Even I texted Andy
03:36When we took that long drive to Maine
03:37On that trip
03:38And she used to tell her kids
03:41Point on a part of your body
03:43As to where we are on the trip
03:45So you start the trip on your toes
03:47And you end at the top of your head
03:49So I texted Andy
03:50And I said
03:50I just told McKinley
03:51We're at her belly button
03:52Because she asked
03:53Where are we
03:54So, I mean
03:54Thank you for that tip
03:55Because that came
03:55Yeah, because kids don't understand time
03:58And all of that
03:59No, trust me
04:00They don't
04:01I don't know if she's a kid
04:01So, I just told you
04:02I don't know if she's a kid
04:03They don't know if she's a kid
04:04I don't know if she's a kid
04:06I don't know if she's a kid
04:07But it's okay
04:07You
