00:00Excited to see him at Busch Gardens this weekend. He's on the phone. It is Mitchell Tenpenny.
00:04Mitchell, I'll just say this. I am so impressed with you right now.
00:07Calling on time from Germany.
00:09Oh, man, of course. We just got out a sound check here in Cologne, Germany.
00:13Super cool, man. And you're doing this leg of the tour with Morgan Evans.
00:17Tell me about these German crowds.
00:18Honestly, it's been amazing. The Germans are so polite, like, crowd-wise.
00:24Like, there's no noise in between songs.
00:26But they're singing every word, like, but very softly.
00:30Like, they don't want to be – they don't want to – what's the word?
00:33They think that they're, like, annoying if they're loud, and they're not.
00:37Right.
00:37But there's so much joy on their face.
00:40It's been one of the coolest experiences I've ever seen.
00:42Like, one girl, she must have been American, was, like, singing louder, and they're, like, shushing her.
00:47Oh, my God.
00:48This is not one of those crowds where you go, all right, you guys take the next verse.
00:51So this is not that show?
00:53Yeah. Well, what you do, you've got to get them to that point and let them know it's okay,
00:56because I don't know if it's a culture thing, but they're just so polite when they go to a show.
01:00You know, they're just – they're watching.
01:01They're so into it, and it's so awesome to see someone like that.
01:04Hardly any phone, just, like, staring and smiling.
01:07But, yeah, it's not like America where we're, like, just screaming everything.
01:11The thing is, you can see everyone singing, and it's, like, I've never in a million years talked to ourselves
01:15and make it all the way over to Europe.
01:17So that's pretty crazy.
01:18And I've heard other country artists say this, is they're shocked that when they go to Europe,
01:24their music is, like, so popular, and people know every single word.
01:29And it's not a diss to American crowds, but it's kind of like they're shocked on how well their music is known in Europe.
01:36But I think it's also because they don't get to see you that often.
01:39So when you do show up, they're going to get their money's worth, you know?
01:42No, that's what I'm saying, 100%.
01:44It's, like, they've listened to every deep cut, every song, and, like, I want to know everything.
01:49They're going to be here, which is really cool, pretty unique, man.
01:52It's been an absolute joy to be over here.
01:56Nice.
01:56So, ich spreche sie Deutsch?
01:59Yes, yes.
02:00I'm learning some words and some dialects.
02:05I'm trying hard.
02:06Our bus driver, Dom, he's amazing.
02:08He's French.
02:08So we have a lot of different accents and dialects going on this whole time.
02:13So I'm trying to learn it all.
02:14Well, the one word that's very easy is das Bier.
02:18So, das Bier.
02:19So you just need to know that one.
02:22Absolutely.
02:23A little bit there, Mitchell.
02:25Well, most people, honestly, they speak English.
02:27So it's been pretty.
02:28There's only a few times where we're just completely lost.
02:31Well, thank God, man.
02:32Thank God.
02:34That's great, man.
02:35Well, give me a bar experience then.
02:38Like, when you go into a bar, what's the difference between going into Losers?
02:43Well, there's a lot.
02:45They're smaller.
02:47They're just pubs, and they're really cool.
02:49And they really want to show off how their culture and how cool it is.
02:54And their beer.
02:55Each different place is very proud of their certain beer in that area.
02:58So from Hamburg to Munich to Berlin to Cologne today.
03:02Even yesterday, Netherlands.
03:03And it's like, they all have their own beer.
03:06They're super prideful of.
03:07So it's like, they make sure that that's what you're drinking.
03:10It's pretty cool.
03:11I love the pride that they have in each city.
03:15It's pretty amazing.
03:17Talking to Mitchell Champini right now.
03:18His single, We Got History, is out.
03:21I'll tell you what.
03:21You're one of the, from the few times I've met you, and I haven't seen you in a while,
03:25but you're married, and you seem like a very happy guy.
03:29God dang, you could write a revenge song.
03:30It's unbelievable, dude.
03:31I mean, you're kind of, and I mean this in the most complimentary way, and I think you'll
03:36take it as a compliment.
03:36You're kind of the Taylor Swift when it comes to the males in country music.
03:40You know how to write a revenge song.
03:43I mean, you said it.
03:44I'll take it.
03:45That's amazing.
03:47You're digging deep on some of this stuff, and I know you've got a great life, and you're
03:51so appreciative of it.
03:52And like I said, you're a happy-go-lucky guy.
03:54We all have a pass, though, JR.
03:55You've got a pass.
03:56Like you said, we've got history.
03:58And you mentioned a lot of Florida spots, actually, in that song, which I appreciate.
04:01But, I mean, how do you get yourself back into that zone?
04:05Because you're obviously like, I've got a beautiful wife here, but how do you get yourself
04:09back into that zone?
04:10Well, I like to write songs that hopefully will make people feel something or remember
04:16or remind them of a feeling.
04:18And so you kind of just dive back.
04:21I mean, it's easier to write stuff like that when you have it good now.
04:26Sometimes it's harder to write it when you're going through it because it's just you don't
04:29have a perspective on what good is yet.
04:31Yeah.
04:32Oh, that's interesting.
04:33So it's like, to me, it's something like, oh, man, those are some of the most emotional
04:38times in my life.
04:39You know, happiness happens, you know, in this industry, a lot rarer sometimes than other
04:45stuff.
04:45Right.
04:45And then you find out, then you get older and adulting, stuff comes on, and you feel
04:49like all the pressures on the world, so the happiness lets you realize how good you actually
04:53have it, so that you know how bad it actually was.
04:56You do a good job of that.
04:58Is your wife with you, traveling?
05:00No, she's not.
05:01She's in the States.
05:02You know, she's touring, too, doing her thing.
05:04She's been out with Drew Parker on some of these dates.
05:06Cool.
05:07You know, writing for this next record.
05:08So she's hustling, grinding.
05:11I definitely miss her.
05:12It's been a week.
05:13So you're partying with Morgan Evans out there.
05:16Oh, yeah.
05:17Morgan's been awesome.
05:18He's the nicest dude in the world.
05:20Just so genuine.
05:21I love that guy, man.
05:23And what a great musician, too.
05:24It's been a lot of fun.
05:25This is the last night of our German tours.
05:28All right.
05:28Well, listen.
05:29We're talking to Mitchell Tenpenny right now.
05:30He's calling us from Germany.
05:31I thought I'd give you a few German phrases to help you out before we let you go.
05:34Is that cool?
05:36Hey, man.
05:37Go for it.
05:38All right.
05:38Here we go.
05:38And by the way, my German accent is perfect.
05:41Do you need me?
05:41You're going to want this.
05:43We're heiden gesticht.
05:46All right.
05:46So you want to say, we're heiden gesticht.
05:48We're heiden gesticht.
05:50Yes, that is.
05:51We got history.
05:52We got history.
05:53Okay.
05:53All right.
05:53So you can do that one.
05:54Heiden gesticht.
05:55You guys are going to love this next one.
05:56You can do that one on stage.
06:00I'm in the ans Balkans.
06:03I'm in the ans Balkans.
06:05In the ans Balkans?
06:07That is at the end of a bar.
06:09At the end of a bar right there.
06:11Yeah.
06:11I love that.
06:12Okay.
06:12And finally, Mick Vick Drunken.
06:16Mick.
06:16Mick Vick Drunken.
06:17Mick Vick Drunken.
06:18I'm going to go with Drunk Me.
06:20Drunk Me.
06:21That's correct.
06:21That's correct.
06:22There we go.
06:23Hey, listen.
06:24Don't try any of those out on stage.
06:26Those were horrible.
06:27But it's funny because Morgan, we were doing an interview together yesterday.
06:32And he tried to say one of his songs in German.
06:36And the interviewer was like, I don't understand.
06:40Stay in your lane type of thing, right?
06:43I love it.
06:44Hey, Mitchell, man.
06:44I can't say thank you enough for calling in, man.
06:46We appreciate it so much.
06:47Yeah, from Germany.
06:48Enjoy.
06:49Safe travels.
06:50And we will see you Sunday at Busch Gardens.
06:52Man, you're always the best.
06:53Thank you for the time.
06:54We'll see you soon.
06:55And ride some roller coasters.
06:56Hey, I'm in.
06:57I'm in.
06:58We'll do it for sure.
06:59Cheers.
07:00See you, dude.
07:00See you.
