00:00We have a man on the phone, which pretty much you can give him any word in the world,
00:04and he can make a song about it.
00:05I mean, we're talking about a snapback hat.
00:07We're talking about a beer can.
00:08How about a hotel key?
00:09A boat?
00:10How about a half-empty glass?
00:12How about a cat?
00:12He'll make a whole album about it.
00:14Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum.
00:16You know, I'm just telling you right now, this guy is crazy talented.
00:19He is the lead singer of the reigning CMA vocal group of the year,
00:25Old Dominion's Matthew Ramsey.
00:26Yay!
00:27Wow.
00:28Can I call you guys every day?
00:31Yeah.
00:31That's what we do, man.
00:32It's a red carpet treatment.
00:33By the way, saw you on the red carpet of the CMAs.
00:36The boys clean up nice.
00:37I'll be honest.
00:38Yeah, yeah.
00:39We were a little extra this year.
00:42I mean, the beard looked, you were all lined up on the beard.
00:45I mean, it looked good, brother.
00:47Yeah, man.
00:47We have to clean up every once in a while.
00:49We can't look like homeless people all the time.
00:51Do you guys have stylists?
00:54Yes, we do have stylists.
00:55Do you really?
00:57Yeah, yeah.
00:57We couldn't do all that stuff by ourselves.
00:59No way.
01:00We definitely need some help.
01:02I think the final approval probably comes from their wives.
01:04Oh, yeah.
01:04Okay.
01:05Well, you're good.
01:06Yeah, yeah.
01:07That's awesome.
01:08Well, we're super excited.
01:09I mean, what a great year you have gotten to look forward to.
01:12On tour with Kenny Chesney and kicks off right here, Tampa, Florida, April 23rd.
01:18Raymond James Stadium.
01:20Man, 60,000 people strong, my friend.
01:22They cannot get here soon enough.
01:24We're so ready for that to start back up again, man.
01:26You know, I actually got to see you open a Cowboy Stadium, AT&T Stadium, and that was
01:31just an insane thing because at that place, the billboard is so huge.
01:35It's like 70 yards long.
01:37You don't know if you should look at the stage or the billboard because it's so big.
01:40I feel like it would be distracting as an artist too, right?
01:43Yeah, the first time we did that with him, we went on tour with him.
01:47We played there.
01:47I have a picture of me standing on stage looking up at myself on that giant screen.
01:52That's so funny.
01:54Well, I will tell you, I don't know if you've played Raymond James Stadium here in Tampa
01:57before, but not only are we a bunch of winners, there's also a pirate ship you'll
02:01be probably focused on as well.
02:03Yes, we have.
02:04We got to do that the last time we were on tour with Kenny, I think.
02:07So, yeah.
02:08I mean, anytime you can put a pirate ship in a stadium, I'm in.
02:11Sure.
02:12Now, what happens, because, you know, Kenny is super good friends with a lot of
02:16football players, and, you know, his good buddy Tom Brady now plays for the
02:20Tampa Bay Bucs.
02:21Like, what are you going to say when you see Tom Brady backstage hanging out that
02:25day?
02:26I'm a fan, man.
02:28I'm definitely a fan of Tom Brady.
02:30So, I'm excited to see him, man.
02:31So, if he shows up, man, I'll definitely give him props.
02:35Oh, he'll be there.
02:36He came down there and killed it.
02:38Yeah, man.
02:38Heck yeah.
02:40And now we're taking all the credit for it.
02:41That's right.
02:42Yeah, that's right.
02:44We act like we knew that was going to happen.
02:46Yeah.
02:46As you should.
02:47As you should.
02:48You have been on tour with Kenny before.
02:50What, honestly, is the coolest thing about being on tour with him?
02:55Because, I mean, you just get to experience so much.
02:57But, I mean, is it, you know, that you get to possibly win all the night's merchandise?
03:02Is that it?
03:02No, no, he doesn't even, we're not in the running for that.
03:06So, he does that.
03:07He does that for his crew and stuff.
03:09But, I don't know.
03:11For me, it's like, we've done it so many times.
03:13Now, this will be our fourth year on tour with him.
03:15And all it, you know, his crew and his band, and he are all family to us.
03:20So, it's just getting, it's just a big summer-long family reunion for us.
03:23We just, we just love them so much.
03:25And we get along with them so much.
03:26And it really is just the most relaxed, chill vibe.
03:30And then, at night, you get to party and have great music and live music again.
03:35So, it's going to be awesome.
03:36Yeah, we're excited for it, too, man.
03:37We cannot wait for that show.
03:38All right, so, Matthew, last time we talked, your album, Time, Tequila, Therapy, was not out yet.
03:44And I was excited to hear it, because I'm a big fan.
03:46You guys are amazing songwriters.
03:48Now, I heard you were going to team up with Gladys Knight.
03:50And, Matt, I would be lying to you if I said, oh, man, I don't know how this is going to go.
03:54But I'm going to be honest with you, that might be the best song on the album.
03:57It's so good.
03:58It's so good, Matt.
04:00Yeah, that was like, I mean, just a serendipitous moment, man.
04:04And she just, you know, we couldn't have planned that.
04:06It just fell into our lap.
04:08And, you know, we were like, we have to take advantage of this.
04:10She is a legend, and she's willing to do this.
04:13So, let's see what we can do.
04:14And she's just such an amazing artist.
04:17And so cool to sit there and watch, you know, an icon sing the lyrics that you wrote.
04:22It's crazy.
04:22Yeah.
04:23And that's the thing, is I think why I had a little bit of doubt or whatever, and I'll never doubt Old Dominion again.
04:29I promise you that, Matt.
04:30But the thing about it was, you have such different styles.
04:33I was like, Old Dominion has just a rhythm, a sound, and they're clever and all that stuff.
04:38And then you think of Gladys Knight, and where she's just this big, powerful voice.
04:42And you both stayed true to your sounds, but somehow they came together.
04:45It works.
04:46It works.
04:46Well, she said, you know, that's like one of the first things she said to us was that her music, she's always felt was actually country music at the core.
04:55So she's like, that's why I identify with it so much.
04:58It just feels like something I would say, something I would do, because I always viewed my music and my songs as country songs.
05:05And they turned into what they are.
05:06So who was your second choice if Gladys said no?
05:10That was it.
05:11She was the only choice.
05:13When they say it was a short list, it was a very short list.
05:15Gladys, did you guys have a chance to, you know, when you were in the studio, I'm sure you're kind of like in awe, like, Gladys, thanks so much for being here.
05:22But did you guys get to record anything else for fun?
05:24Was she a fan of any other of your songs?
05:26No, we just kind of, we didn't want to hold her up.
05:29I mean, it was so amazing.
05:30She just kept singing this song, you know, and like, we just watched her work.
05:34And, you know, we weren't going to tell her to stop.
05:36And we weren't going to, like, try to produce her or anything.
05:39We just let her go until she felt like she was done.
05:42And that was it.
05:43Yeah, so this, she never heard this.
05:48That never came up with Gladys?
05:50That was a missed opportunity to get Gladys to do some meows.
05:53She would have killed it on that song, I'll tell you what.
05:56I mean, you got to remember the lyrics.
05:58It's hard to just jump in and remember lyrics like that, so.
06:01Man, I'll tell you, like, people always ask us when the moment is that we realized that we had finally made it.
06:08And I think it's when we decided to put a whole album of meows out.
06:11It actually happened.
06:14You know, I didn't look at the research.
06:16Did it sell well?
06:17I mean, did it hit the screen well?
06:19It did surprisingly well.
06:21It did better than anyone at our record label ever expected it to do that.
06:25Yeah, it was awesome.
06:26And that's kind of a middle finger to the record label, which is awesome, too, at the same time.
06:31But you know what?
06:31I think your timing was great because, you know, people are kind of looking for something during quarantine.
06:37And then also coming off Tiger King, Big Cat Rescue, let's go.
06:41Right?
06:42That's awesome.
06:43It's very, very calculated, man.
06:45April 23rd, we will see this man and the rest of the boys with Dan and Shay, Carly Pierce, and the man, Kenny Chesney, at Raymond James Stadium.
06:54Brother, we cannot wait to see you.
06:56You're always welcome on this show.
06:57We will always give you a great intro.
06:59You deserve it, and we appreciate your time.
07:01Thank you, guys.
07:02We'll see y'all soon.
07:03All right.
07:03See you, man.
07:03Bye.
07:04All right.
07:04See you.
