With WASA’s warning of water shortages this dry season, Chair of the Joint Select Committee on Local Authorities, Service Commissions and Statutory Authorities, Sunity Maharaj, had questions about rates for companies in the bottled-water business.

00:00We want to ensure that when it comes to the commercial exploitation of water, that profits
00:11are reasonable, because it's clear it's a very profitable business, and that we want
00:16to ensure that the water that is sold or made available to individuals that occur naturally
00:24and belongs to the public is not being extracted and subjected to profits for the very same
00:34public that is not getting the water.
00:37And whether or not, and this is a question that will probably come up in the future,
00:41an issue to be addressed, in times of rationing of water, is there rationing to the commercial
00:50producers, I don't want to call them producers, people who sell water, that if there is a
01:00shortage, do you cut back on what is available to them and what they can get on a daily basis
01:06to allow the public to have more water?
