00:10Speaking on the TV6 Morning Edition, Sharon Inglefield revealed that most road traffic accidents involve privately owned vehicles.
00:19She's urging pedestrians to stay alert, noting that even with a 22% drop in 2025, they still make up about 35% of all road fatalities.
00:32Inglefield warns that reckless motorists remain a deadly threat and says urgent attention must be paid to dealing with them.
00:42Cyclists in particular, make sure you have on your lights. We've had two cyclist deaths this year.
00:48You know, we also have six motorcyclists.
00:52So we need to, these are all vulnerable road users and therefore you have no shell to protect you, no vehicle to protect you.
00:59So you need to be even more diligent with the recklessness going on amongst the drivers of private vehicles in particular,
01:07which makes up the bulk of the fatalities. Private vehicles, not taxis, not even heavy vehicles, but private vehicles.
01:16She warns that many motorists are unfit to drive on the nation's roads.
01:21I estimate there are about 60,000 drivers who possibly should not be on our roads today because they're pushing the boundaries.
01:29They're being reckless. They're really not wearing seatbelts.
01:33They're drinking and driving. They're distracted. They are speeding.
01:36You know, the speed limit is not a target. You need to adapt speed to road conditions.
01:42And we all know in Trinidad and Tamigo that our road conditions are not perfect.
01:47Inglefield warns that reckless drivers must be re-educated immediately.
01:52She insists that their mindsets need to be completely re-engineered to grasp that every law they break endangers lives.

02:04She also warns that many are unaware of the severe penalties they may face despite the now scrapped demerit point system.
