Thousands of people across Woodland, San Francique, Penal and environs are expected to start receiving a more reliable supply of water within a few weeks’ time.

This as the Water and Sewage Authority is undertaking a major pipeline-laying project in the Woodland community at a cost of $26M.

On Tuesday the Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales did a site visit of the project, our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh was there.

00:00Weeks or months of dry taps is something Minister of Public Utilities Marvin
00:05Gonzalez says will soon be an experience of the past for thousands of woodland
00:11San Francisco and Pinal residents. This area as you know has been suffering from
00:19a very poor water supply for decades and that is as a result of the current
00:26pipeline infrastructure which cannot carry the volume of water to meet with
00:32several communities especially those that occupy on the high elevation. Two
00:38weeks ago four contractors hired for the five-phase project began work to lay
00:43down 6.5 kilometers of pipeline of that four kilometers of 16 inch pipe and the
00:50rest of the way in 12 inch lines replacing the old existing 8 inch
00:54pipelines. The work is just over 40% complete. The installation of a
01:01transmission pipeline from the corner of the M2 ring road woodland along the
01:05woodland road up to the corner of woodland and tenant trees and then the
01:10further installation of a transmission line on the end of Antilles trees up to
01:16the corner of Antilles trees and San Francisco. During a visit of the work sites along the
01:21woodland main road on Tuesday Minister Gonzalez says work should be completed
01:26by April and over 39,000 people in these and surrounding communities should see a
01:33great improvement. Many of the communities here suffer from an
01:38intermittent or unreliable supply of water ranging from once every nine days
01:42to once every 18 days or 20 days and when there is a disruption that can go
01:49to 25 days easily. This pipeline upgrade would ensure that the carrying capacity
01:58of the pipeline would increase significantly thereby improving the
02:03supply of water to at least to most of the affected communities to at least in
02:08the in the in the short term twice per week which is a significant improvement.
02:13To supply the increased volume Minister Gonzalez says a number of wells being
02:19drilled in the southwest region of the island will help ease the dependence of
02:23this area on the Pinal and Karani water treatment plants. When asked about the
02:29impact on the area's road infrastructure Minister Gonzalez says it's part of the
02:34project scope and will be fully restored when the pipelines are laid and tested.
