00:00West Indies legend Brian Charles Lara has constantly been on the go, as he's involved
00:05in many activities.
00:07The man who put Trinidad and Tobago, and by extension the West Indies on the map, was
00:11part of a book signing at the Mount Hope Hospital's amphitheatre on Monday afternoon.
00:15That happens to be his latest book, Lara, The England Chronicles.
00:19While addressing the gathering, Lara spoke about sport and education, saying they go
00:23hand in hand.
00:25I wouldn't be in front of you here today if I did not pick up on my schoolwork.
00:30Another very important hurdle is about challenging myself.
00:34When I played cricket, I would say that the majority of the time in school cricket, you
00:40know, I was up there, the best batter, I was the captain of the team, and not much challenges.
00:46But the minute I started to challenge myself in my schoolwork, I started to learn a lot
00:51more about having that level of attrition.
00:56Lara touched on the importance of sport as it leads to a healthy lifestyle.
01:01According to the former West Indies captain, those who cannot make it to the highest level
01:05should still keep active.
01:07As such, he plans to do his part for a better Trinidad and Tobago.
01:11My aim is to continue that interest for a period of time, even if they don't make it
01:16to the very top.
01:17At least at the age of 19, 20, 21, 22, they have something to do.
01:22They may go to work at 8 o'clock, you know, finish at 4 o'clock, but we've got so much
01:27sporting ground with lights now, you can keep them busy for another six hours.
01:31So it's my intention to, first of all, improve the facilities, because I believe that the
01:36facilities around the country are very poor, and it doesn't lend itself for anyone to play
01:42properly.
01:43Lara has a lot of respect for those in the medical profession.
01:47In his closing comments, the 55-year-old took time out to praise them.
01:52I tell myself this all the time, that I prefer to see a doctor save a life than maybe a great
02:02sporting moment.
02:03It's something that we don't have the opportunity to, and I believe that you guys are the unsung
02:09heroes, the ones that make a huge difference in our society.
02:17From 131 test matches, Lara hit 34 centuries, and still holds the highest score of 400 not
02:23out.
