Leeds: Should parents be fined for taking children out of school during term time for holidays?

Many families can’t afford holidays during the official school breaks, but parents who take their children out in term time face fines. Should the system change, or is it necessary to protect education?

00:00I can see the benefit of taking children out of school and disagree with the fines.

00:06There are certain parents that can't take holidays when it's school holidays.

00:11So I think people should be allowed to have two weeks out of the term away in the summer.

00:16I'm one of those guilty people who actually took my children out of school for a holiday in Florida.

00:22Now I'm going back a long time now, but actually by moving the cursor on my laptop,

00:28I've probably saved around about £2,000.

00:31So although my children are grown up now, I've got sympathy with people who do it.

00:35I didn't take my son out of school for his holidays,

00:38but I would now with the current climate and the way things are.

00:42And yeah, everything's expensive, so people do need a holiday

00:45and they want to have adventures with their children, so it should be allowed.

00:48We would never have taken them out at crucial times of their education,

00:51such as when they take SATs, GCSEs, A-levels, etc.

00:55It was always at a time when they were young and it didn't have that much impact.
