Rainy weather to dampen recovery efforts of DC plane wreckage

AccuWeather's Dan DePodwin says rainy and mild weather, on Jan. 31, could dampen the search and recovery efforts of the tragic plane collision that occurred over Washington, D.C.

00:00down. Thankfully, yesterday we had a lot of dry air and a lot of sunshine here across Washington,

00:06D.C., but it has been the forecast all week. Today is a little bit of a different day

00:11for recovery efforts. Yeah, Bernie, the weather here in the D.C. area has taken a turn to be

00:15rainy as they recover the wreckage here from the tragic accident on Wednesday night in the

00:21Potomac River. We expect rain throughout much of the day, not heavy rain, but enough to be

00:25just a damp and wet day here across the area. Temperatures will be on the milder side than

00:30they have been, and that's certainly good news from a water temperature perspective. Those water

00:36temperatures will be slowly coming up here over the next several days. You know, the rain's been

00:40relatively light this morning. The one concern that we do have, and I know we were talking with

00:45our team of experts out on the floor, while it's rain right now, wouldn't be surprised that there

00:52could be a rumble of thunder in the area later today or this evening. Yeah, Bernie, we were

00:58looking at that earlier, and it seems like there's going to be a line of what probably are

01:01thunderstorms through Virginia later on this afternoon or evening. I think the best risk for

01:06lightning, or the greatest chance for lightning, is south of D.C., but probably can't completely

01:10rule out a rumble or two of thunder, and obviously if there is lightning nearby, that might disrupt

01:15the recovery efforts of the wreckage later on today. And then this will all move on out of the

01:21area later on tonight, then we just turn dry and chillier to start the weekend. You know, that's

01:26the thing, at least, you know, it's not as cold as it was a couple of days ago, but again, the main

01:30thing is we take a look at the seven-day forecast. Doesn't really, you see no signs of winter,

01:37absolutely none, as we start the weekend. Yeah, Bernie, it's going to be a much milder stretch

01:42here for D.C., and I think the important thing there is for the folks from the emergency response

01:47standpoint who are doing the recovery of the wreckage, the water temperatures will be warming

01:52up a bit. Obviously they have plenty of different gear to be able to do this in a safe manner,

01:56but water temperatures will be coming up from the 30s, which they are now, probably into the 40s

02:00over the next week or so, and the ice that is still in a few pockets of the river should be

02:04diminishing as well as those temperatures warm up even into the 60s come Monday, and then looks like

02:08a pretty mild week ahead with plentiful highs in the 50s and nighttime lows right around freezing.
