Is the government really attempting to tackle crime with the S.O E. or is it just electioneering? This is the concern raised by Opposition Senator Damian Lyder.

00:00Today marks 16 days since the beginning of the state of emergency and yesterday
00:06the government got parliamentary approval for a three-month extension.
00:11This follows the over 600 murders recorded in 2024 and according to
00:17government, reliable information about plans for retaliatory killings among
00:22gang members. Speaking on the Morning Edition, the United National Congress
00:27Senator Damien Lyder said it's too soon to say if the SOE has yielded positive
00:34results. At the end of the day it's too early at this point with 16 days into
00:38this too early to really see if there's any tangible results. I mean you may have
00:42that shock factor in the first week or so that that criminals might be wary of
00:47you know what you know what is what is the protective services coming with what
00:51is the government coming with but we have seen situations when one weekend or
00:56in three days we've seen 17, 18 murders. According to him he is regularly in the
01:03Western Peninsula and has seen Coast Guard vessels that can't be used. He
01:08tells us he has witnessed boats coming in from Venezuela with no stops or
01:13checks being done. Lyder chastised the government saying if their intent is to
01:19stop illegal guns from entering the country and to stop the bloodshed. At the
01:24onset of this state of emergency we should at least see the borders being
01:28patrolled. Additionally he noted the recently recorded homicides as a major
01:34concern. It is just up to yesterday a lady walking out of Belmont gunned down
01:39in broad daylight. We saw we saw another yet again another lawyer a couple being
01:48assassinated with with no with no reason you know no their house wasn't
01:53ransacked they didn't seem to be robbed we saw so we are seeing the murder
01:58starting to pick back up again. The senator tells us the issues with
02:02education health care and social welfare are all related to the escalating crime
02:08problem. When you see an economy spiraling downwards where unemployment a
02:14lack of opportunity for young young adults coming up in this world there's
02:20a positive correlation between those aspects and crime. Lyder holds the view
02:27that over the past 10 years the entire government has failed to run the country
02:33properly while addressing the Parliament on Monday. During debate on the motion to
02:38extend the state of emergency the Prime Minister stated that the murders will
02:43not be eliminated during the state of emergency but runaway crime will be
02:49arrested. Nicole M Romany TV6 News
