00:00Hello and a very happy new year to you. The weather's taken a turn for the colder as you've

00:06probably noticed. A chilly start to Thursday morning under largely clear skies. Big area

00:12of high pressure sitting out to the northwest of the UK. This line of cloud is the cold

00:17front that brought quite a lot of wet weather across the south during Wednesday. It's a

00:22cold front so now it's cleared through. We're in the colder air and we're seeing plenty

00:25of showers coming in. Those showers are of snow across northern Scotland and northern

00:30parts of Northern Ireland. Seeing a mix of hail and sleet and snow in the showers too

00:34and a few of them just grazing the eastern side of England where there's a particularly

00:38brisk and chilly wind. For the vast majority though it is just a fine sunny winter's day.

00:46Temperatures struggling a little bit, generally getting up to three or four degrees Celsius,

00:51maybe five or six across parts of the south. But feeling a lot colder along the east coast

00:56with that brisk wind and certainly colder across northern Scotland with that cold air

01:00in place. Further snow showers coming in here. In fact we've got a weather front pushing

01:04south bringing a bit more in the way of sleet and snow coming in across northern Scotland

01:09during the night. Further west it'll turn slightly milder so although there'll be some

01:13snow showers many of the showers here will be of rain but that could then lead to things

01:18being icy across western Scotland, northern Ireland and down into parts of northwest England.

01:22So Met Office yellow warnings are in place for the night. For much of England and Wales

01:27though just a dry night, lengthy clear spells and a hard frost forming. Temperatures widely

01:33well below freezing certainly in towns and cities maybe down to minus five, minus six

01:38in some rural parts of the south. Still those wintry conditions across Scotland first thing.

01:44So warnings in place and the ice warning in place for northwest England, northern

01:47Ireland too as the showers continue to feed in here. The snow should start to ease across

01:53northern Scotland during the morning. The odd shower here and there but many places

01:57across the south will again be dry and fine with plenty of sunshine. Again temperatures

02:02are going to struggle however after starting a few degrees below will tick up to just a

02:07few degrees above three or four Celsius, the high for many of us. And then a bit more of

02:13a change. As we go through Friday evening again temperatures will drop quite quickly

02:18once more below freezing. So again the potential for icy conditions wherever we've got any

02:22showers feeding in. At this stage many of those showers will be of rain, some snow over

02:27the hills. But we're not done with the snowy weather and we need to look down to the southwest

02:33for things changing. This air of low pressure is moving in. Now it's coming in from the

02:37southwest so it is actually going to bring eventually some milder air with it but it's

02:41also going to bring moisture. And as that moisture hits the colder air in place well

02:46that could generate some heavy snowfall as it moves northwards during Saturday night

02:51and into Sunday. So there's the milder air. It's really on this boundary where this weather

02:56front lies that we could see some heavy snow for a time and it's tending to move north

03:00and then kind of pivot round. So the Midlands, Wales, northern England, southern Scotland

03:05at risk from a heavy dump of snow. Could see some freezing rain as well particularly across

03:10parts of Wales. Into the weekend we are quite concerned about this area of low pressure

03:15bringing more wintry problems. As I say freezing rain and some heavy snowfall. Warnings are
