In celebration of World Human Rights Day,
00:03
Trevor Johnson of the Joint Trade Union Movement says human rights or workers' rights
00:08
can be seen as under attack in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:12
Even in Trinidad and Tobago, when we look at, say, some of the institutions of the state,
00:19
you know, we seem to be seeing an erosion, and some of it very subtle, erosion of the rights.
00:28
Johnson says the blatant disregard of the right to free and fair collective bargaining was worsened
00:33
by this.
00:34
The decision to accept the recommendations of that report, which basically ensures that the
00:42
politicians from the prime minister and senior public servants, etc., get significant increases,
00:51
whilst you ask the rest of the trade unions in the public sector, in the public service,
01:00
to accept a four percent.
01:02
And according to David Abdullah, leader of the Movement for Social Justice,
01:06
the country appears to be in dangerous territory.
01:09
That freedom of association, in terms of trade union association, is frustrated by the whole
01:17
process of people not being able to join a trade union of their choice,
01:21
and the process of the recognition board, and so on.
01:23
Freedom of assembly is limited by laws that have been passed, which limit, you know,
01:34
you have to get permission from the commission of police to march, and these kinds of things.
01:40
So freedom of assembly is limited.
