00:00Artificial Intelligence Ethicist Professor Renee Cummings says while Trinidad and Tobago
00:07is the first country in the region to establish a Ministry of AI, it still has some catching
00:12up to do with nations like Jamaica and Dominican Republic.
00:17She warns that while AI is transformative and vital for future growth, it also carries
00:23biases, underscoring the need for strong human intelligence and ethical guidance.
00:30Professor Cummings believes the Ministry of AI can play a key role in driving innovation
00:36and placing Trinidad and Tobago in a position of strategic competitiveness.
00:41The world is now being negotiated at a global and geopolitical level on leveraging your AI
00:49capacity, your compute capacity, your ability to innovate your society with this technology.
00:56So we are considered, unfortunately, part of the Global South.
00:59And of course, the rest of the world, meaning the US and Europe and many of the other sort
01:04of G20 nations, some of them, are considered sort of leading as a part of this Global North
01:10Initiative.
01:11So it's going to take a lot for us to compete, but we can do it.
01:16Sarah Cummings says countries worldwide are already using AI in national security and defence,
01:23but Trinidad and Tobago is still not using its data to full potential.
01:28She believes AI can drive public sector innovation, education reform and climate resilience, and
01:35warns that as global powers advance with ethical AI and autonomous weapons, this country cannot
01:42be left behind.
01:43So these are big global questions that's being discussed and decided just globally, and we
01:50have got to become part of that conversation, and we've got to start to innovate our own
01:55thinking and our own systems, because what AI is showing you are the countries that are
02:00not AI-savvy, not AI-ready, already have been left back about 20 years in their own development
02:07and not even knowing it.
02:08Professor Cummings says there are tremendous rewards to be gained from artificial intelligence,
02:14but Trinidad and Tobago must make itself competitive.
02:18She stresses that creativity and innovation are abundant here, but warns that if we don't
02:25act, even cultural treasures like the steel pan could become so AI-infused that the world
02:31may stop looking to this country's pan men and women for their unique talent.
02:38Now, Chad GPT and many AI-audio systems could give you a steel pan.
02:42I can say to an AI system, compose a pan song for me that is a combination of Jit Samru,
02:49Bugsy Sharp and Ken Professor Fillmore, and I can get a composition that combines the best
02:55of them, and then I could present that for a competition.
