00:00When I was seven years old, I used to watch a lot of YouTube when I came home from school
00:07and I saw a lot of straight hair and blonde hair and I was like, oh my god, that's so pretty,
00:15I want that. So I looked at my hair and their hair and I hated how it was so different to the
00:21one I thought the other one was pretty. 12-year-old Jade Mejias, during an interview
00:26with TV6 News, Jade said her mom Siobhan Mejias took action when she realized she was depressed
00:34over her natural hair. My mom decided to cut her hair shorter than mine to make me see that my hair
00:43wasn't that short and it helped boost my confidence a lot but it didn't help all the way. Jade's book
00:51My Superhero, Why I Love My Afro Hair, is aimed to suit all ages. It doesn't matter how old you are,
01:01you can take care of your hair at any age and sometimes you're even grown up that way and you
01:08hate it even when you're older and you just don't like it and I think it's important for young
01:14readers because it could start from really little like even six years old. Jade told TV6 News her
01:2348-page book is well researched. She hopes this book inspires children and adults around the world.
01:31Her wish is also for similar books to be found on local bookshelves. I hope it could go worldwide
01:38because there's a lot of children all over the world with the same problem and issue. It's very
01:46common and I hope that I can inspire people everywhere. And this 12-year-old does not plan
01:52to stop there. She is working on two more books treating with environmental issues.
