While teacher absenteeism is no longer a major issue at the nation's schools, students are the ones staying away from classes.

A parliamentary committee learnt today that there are over ten thousand reports of student truancy currently before the Student Support Services Division of the Ministry of Education.

00:00Chronic student absenteeism plaguing the nation's schools has seen some
00:05improvement over the past year says the acting chief education officer in the
00:11same this year the number would have dropped to 3920 still pretty high but we
00:20would have seen a reduction mr. Ramerton says once a student is absent from
00:24school for two to three days without the submission of a medical record it is
00:29reported to the school support services division engage in one of the
00:35initiatives where they have meeting with parents to follow up with their
00:41absenteeism and to see what support system may be needed at the home level
00:48to in some way get these absenteeism at a lower level get students back out to
00:54school truancy reports sent by the school are referred to the ministry's
00:59disciplinary team within five days and intervention is due to take place within
01:0414 days but the number of truancy reports before the multidisciplinary
01:09team doesn't quite add up to the number quoted by mr. Ramerton as a matter of
01:15fact the reports before the team are more than double at ten thousand eight
01:20hundred and eighty and I ask you how many cases you have before you at this
01:25point in time sure so the data I have is the number of referrals received by
01:39district between the September 2022 to August 2023 we have three thousand nine

02:03inquiry into the underperformance at nation schools from 2022 to present and
02:09the numbers that would have been reported where suspensions would have
02:14been done based on investigations at the school level that would have been done
02:18and conducted the primary school the total is 77 in secondary it is 470 but
