It's only the first week of school, and already there has been a fight between a teacher and a student, and an altercation between a parent and a student caught on camera. The Ministry of Education is investigating the incidents, meantime stakeholders are asking, where were the police officers? Rynessa Cutting reports.
00:00Within the first three days of the new school year, there have already been at least two violent incidents involving school children.
00:08However, the two incidents making the rounds on social media involve a teacher and a student, and a parent and a student.
00:16In the video, a student of El Dorado East Secondary School can be heard questioning where the assigned police officer was at the time of the incident.
00:32It's the question also on the lips of the NPTA president.
00:36Because this school is one of those schools on the list of at-risk schools.
00:43And while we know that a police officer cannot be in all places at all times, we question where was the police officer at this particular time when this parent slapped this student.
00:57Nevertheless, the NPTA is denouncing the parent's behavior.
01:01It should never be the remit of any father to take matters into his own hands and intervene in situations involving two students.
01:13Disagreements and infractions between students are guided by established regulatory procedures in the school, and certainly by the established National School Code of Conduct, which deals with such eventualities.
01:31This particular school is under the ambit of the school-oriented police unit.
01:39And as such, this now brings into question a legal matter.
01:45On Wednesday, the Ministry of Education issued a release condemning the altercation between a teacher and a student of a Riemann North Secondary School,
01:55and indicating that a full investigation had been initiated.
01:58However, as of earlier today, Tuta told TV6 News, no ministry officials had visited the school.
02:06Tuta has been informed that officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service visited the Riemann North Secondary School this morning and addressed the assembly of students.
02:22We were informed that the officers were strict with their warnings to the students present.
02:31Tuta cannot confirm whether the teacher reported for duty or if the student involved was at school today.
02:42Up to the time of this recording, the team from the Ministry of Education did not report to the school in order to lend support or receive any reports.
02:58Tuta awaits the findings of the report and that the recommendations for any action be taken.
