Teachers at Aranguez North Secondary School say they are refusing to work.

They say there are health and safety issues at the school that the Ministry of Education must address.

The Education Minister anticipates an award to a contractor, to do repairs, will be made as soon as possible.

00:00Officials from TUTOR turned up at Aranguez North Secondary School on Monday to show support,
00:07as teachers at the school are refusing to work.
00:11They gave the Ministry of Education, through the administration, two weeks to address the
00:18situation at the school, health and safety issues.
00:23According to TUTOR, the teachers did not get an official response directly from the Education
00:29Ministry.
00:30The union says on Monday, teachers initiated the refusal to work process under the Occupational
00:37Safety and Health Act.
00:38They are stating that there are several classrooms that either have poor or no lighting, inadequate,
00:46poor or no ventilation due to functioning and non-functioning EC units.
00:53TUTOR's president claims some teachers have fallen ill as a result, and their refusal
00:58to work will continue until conditions improve.
01:02Responding, the Minister of Education says, information about works to be done was sent
01:07to the school last week.
01:09She says the tender process to get a contractor to do the work has been completed, and it's
01:15anticipated an award will be made as soon as possible this week.
01:20According to the Minister, works to be done include electrical works, replacing and repairing
01:26air conditioning units, termite treatment and repairs to leaking roofs.
