00:00The furor over the collapse of two cases involving police officers this week left
00:05the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to do damage control. Today, Commissioner
00:10of Police Ila Herwood-Christopher, who reviewed the case report involving the
00:14officers in the extortion case in Sangu Gandhi in 2023, revealed that specific
00:19action will now be taken against police officers specific to this case. At this
00:24time, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against three officers,
00:29stemming from the first matter involving seven officers. The Commissioner said she
00:35took note of the public's interests and the comments of other stakeholders
00:38regarding these specific cases and she'll also be consulting with the
00:42Director of Public Prosecutions. The Office of the Director of Public
00:46Prosecutions has also been engaged with respect to determining the way forward
00:52with these two matters. The TTPS recognizes the gravity of these matters
01:00and it is my intention to do everything possible to ensure that these matters
01:06are determined in accordance with the full extent of the law. Following the
01:11collapse of the case involving those seven officers on Monday, a similar
01:16situation occurred on Wednesday when five officers were discharged in a
01:20bribery case, which threw an even darker light on how police officers have been
01:24handling court matters pertinent to their colleagues. The Police Complaints
01:28Authority has also given the public an assurance that it will also be
01:32investigating the matters. The Commissioner gave the fervent
01:35assurance to the public that officers who break the law will also be
01:39subjected to a thorough legal process going forward. As Commissioner, I assert
01:44that any officer found to have engaged in misconduct or failed to meet the
01:52required standards of performance will be held accountable. The TTPS remains
01:59committed to transparency, fairness and the pursuit of justice for all.
