00:00A senior lawyer has urged newly appointed Attorney General Dusuki Mokhtar to return

00:06the power to decide on representations to state prosecution directors instead of consolidating

00:12such tasks in putrajaya.

00:14N. Sivananthan said this would save a lot of time and resources, allowing state directors

00:19to drop or reduce charges more efficiently, even amid a trial.

00:24He said deputy public prosecutors have direct access to their directors, enabling prompt

00:28decisions on representations.

00:31Sivananthan also said state directors, supported by investigating officers, can more readily

00:36obtain feedback and issue instructions for further investigations.

00:41Meanwhile, lawyer Salim Bashir hopes Dusuki will instruct his DPPs not to seek the imposition

00:47of high bail sums for unrepresented accused persons, saying that bail should ensure attendance

00:52at trials, not serve as punishment.

00:56He said DPPs must be reminded that accused persons were presumed innocent until proven

01:01guilty and must be given the opportunity to post bail in a reasonable sum.

01:06Senior lawyer Hisham Tehpotik said the AEG must only level charges against suspects if

01:11he was convinced that a prima facie case can be proved.
