Close to ten thousand students participated in Caribbean Airline's career Fair at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya ... Your favorite TV station was there with some very eager budding journalists... Here’s Urvashi Tiwari Roopnarine with the details…
00:00The Center of Excellence is abuzz with activity. Caribbean Airlines is on day two of its three-day career fair.
00:08I think it's a good opportunity for students, especially if they're not sure about what they want to do in the future.
00:14There's no rain in the forecast as young forecaster Rain Bowman keeps herself occupied at our CCN booth.
00:22We went to a really informative workshop about AI and how Trinidadians are actually leveraging AI.
00:28Because I was thinking, you know, we're kind of third world, we're a little behind.
00:32But no, we actually have firms in Trinidad that do utilize that first world technology we see all the time
00:37and are actively helping Trinidadians decentralize the way they use this crazy technology to all communities in the island.
00:47Thousands of students made this place look like a jungle.
00:51But Malabar Secondary's Safari assures us there was no monkeying around.
00:56I think that it's a good opportunity for young teenagers who's now going to finish school and think about a career, what they want to do in life.
01:04And I think it's a good idea learning about different stuff from different, like, places.
01:10This trio from Corial Secondary School also tried their hand at our teleprompter, sharing some of what their day entailed.
01:19I learned about some animals.
01:22What did you learn?
01:24Me, I learned about the programs going on in MIT.
01:29And also the agriculture.
01:32Some religious stuff.
01:34They welcomed today's opportunity to have a peek into the world of work.
01:39Well, it could inspire them to do good in life.
01:42Like, they might see something they like and they might get into it more or less.
01:46I think, for instance, like me, I'm not too sure what career path I want to go through.
01:51So this could be a good opportunity to bring some clarity to their minds and stuff like that, yeah.
01:57And how about some inspiration to other young men navigating the throes of adolescence?
02:03Just stay positive, you know, do the correct thing at the end of the day, yeah.
02:08And just live life, but in a positive way.
02:11Our camera seemed to be a magnet for young people eager to share.
02:15I wanted to be a flight attendant, so this was a good experience for me to come out and see how it is about, see certain things about what's going on here.
02:22And how do you feel now that you've been here and you've seen a bit around the United States?
02:26I feel good, I feel more experienced, and I feel like I can make it.
02:30For some, today's exercise may have simply been a forum for getting out and interacting in a positive way.
02:37Coming here today, it really pushed us to be out there more and be more intimate.
02:44More interactive, learn to communicate.
02:47Yes, and learn to be friendly and talkative with your peers and children from other schools.
02:55For some, it was about learning life skills.
02:58It speaks about mental health, awareness, and those kind of stuff.
03:03And as a person who wants to study psychology in the future, it was very beneficial to me.
03:09And for others, it was definitely about finding a career path, or even an option B.
03:15Growing up, I always wanted to be a footballer, but I didn't know if football didn't work out, what else I would get into.
03:23But now I saw it as a Coast Guard service, and I think I would like to get into any one of these services.
03:29If football doesn't work out for me, that would be a good path to go and protect and save them.
03:34Or maybe, when you're from a marginalized geographical location or school, today offered an opportunity to change the narrative.
03:43Yeah, everybody say we school is a bad school.
03:45But what would you like them to do?
03:47You know, come and visit the school, see what we bring, all the sports and things. We're trying to change the name.
03:53We're trying to make better the school.
03:55Centre of Excellence was a venue to catch up with a celebrity or two.
04:00Take this familiar face, for instance, a driving force behind the event, which proves to have a little of something for everyone.
04:09The future is here.
04:11We are engaging with the future of Trinidad and Tobago, and by extension, the region.
04:17Education is one of the pillars of Caribbean Airlines' sustainability program.
04:23We have education, community and wellness.
04:27And while the focus is education, it's also about community.
04:32The career fair saw participation from all the secondary schools in Tobago.
04:37Students and staffers were flown in by the national airline itself.
04:42We expect in excess of 8,000 students over the three-day period from 99 schools.
04:49I suspect by the time I count tomorrow, there will be more than 99 schools because there were some late registrations.
04:57With scores of the country's top employers under one roof,
05:00Lagor tells us CAL's main aim is to ensure students take away a positive experience that will be memorable for the rest of their lives.
05:10Because you never know the kind of impact you can have on somebody's life, positive or negative.
05:16But the aim is for us to have a positive influence on these children.
05:21Let them know that you can aspire.
05:23Let them know what is available, what is out there, so that they can plan and live fulfilling lives and become good citizens of Trinidad and Tobago and the region.
05:35Each year's event seems to top the last, and Lagor tells us she has a major trump card for 2025 with a focus always on young minds.
