Rain that fell this past weekend, ending record-setting dry spells in the Northeast, was not enough to eliminate a serious threat of wildfires.
Transcript
00:00About a quarter inch of rain fell over one of the large wildfires there in North Jersey that spilled across the state line into New York State.
00:07D.C. had two-tenths of an inch, breaking a streak there.
00:10So the record in Philadelphia is specifically 42 days between measurable rain events.
00:16And Saturday was the last day without measurable rain.
00:19And then we finally saw it on Sunday evening.
00:21This smashed the record by 13 days, almost two weeks.
00:24Pretty incredible.
00:25You'll notice that event that we broke there, the record, the previous record from 1874, was also an autumn event.
00:32So tomorrow we're going to have accurate to real field temperatures in the low 30s and upper 20s here in places like North Jersey into Connecticut.
00:38It's going to be a cold one in the morning for the kids at the bus stop.
00:41And while it will be cool, the breeze will be active, the humidity will be low, and we are concerned about the Jennings Creek wildfire now.
00:475,000 acres burnt, 10% containment here.
00:50This is in Passaic County, New Jersey, and Orange County, New York.
00:53And again, this sadly did lead to one life lost.
00:57A young firefighter had a tree fall on him, and it did claim his life there.
01:03So very sad things.
01:04And we're going to have additional poor air quality here in New York and in Philadelphia,
01:09in both cases categorized as poor air quality with the expectation of more smoke coming in through the area there tomorrow because of more activity upstream.
01:18So there's the fire danger zone.
01:20There's a hope, though, of more rain later this week.
01:22At the very end of the weekend, more of these areas here breathe.
01:24Farther south, though, we're looking pretty good for most.
01:27Yeah, for most.
01:28I mean, we're dry across the southeast as well.
01:31There's really not much to say here over the next few days.
01:34We do have the chance for a few showers here across the Atlantic coast, the Florida south and central.
01:39But overall, you're going to be dodging those raindrops.
01:41You're not going to see a whole lot happening there.
01:44A lot of us, though, remaining dry and warm along that I-10 corridor on south.
