Wildfire danger ramps up in the Northeast

As the ongoing drought intensifies in much of the northeastern U.S., small fires can quickly blaze out of control.

00:00We haven't seen a lot of rain here

00:02over the past few weeks, really months,

00:05and there is a statewide burn ban.

00:07In place until November 30th,

00:09here in New York,

00:10all due to the hazardous weather

00:12that has been taking place as of

00:15late because it has been so dry and

00:17because it has been windy at times.

00:20We're even seeing fires across the Big Apple,

00:23so you know something to be on high alert

00:26for and when we compare this to some

00:29previous fires, the Jennings Creek Fire

00:31is the largest we've seen in New York State

00:33since 2008.

00:35So it's been some time since we've seen

00:37some of these impacts here,

00:39or at least similar impacts.

00:41And we have seen that those states

00:46have deployed resources, not just New York,

00:48but also areas like New Jersey.

00:50We've had a few helicopters,

00:52but look out, that fire threat escalates here

00:55Friday into Saturday.

00:57That's tomorrow into Saturday,

00:58as we are anticipating those winds

01:01to start to ramp up,

01:02coming out of the northwest

01:03following this storm's exit.

01:06And we've really seen a lot of changes.

01:09Here's early summer,

01:10where we essentially had zero drought.

01:12By fall, now we're approaching

01:15extreme, exceptional drought here,

01:18especially across the Ohio Valley,

01:20but you see that extreme extending

01:22a little bit here,

01:24even with this week's drought monitor update

01:27across southern New Jersey.

01:28So that's something we're monitoring,

01:30especially when we talk about wildfires

01:33that are still ongoing,

01:34but you know, fire crews good right now

01:37with the containment,

01:37or at least there is good news

01:39as that containment number continues to go up.

01:42But we're still tracking that threat

01:44because any little spark

01:46can do something similar or worse.

01:49So please do your part.

01:50Don't contribute, of course.

01:52No outdoor burning recommended,

01:53especially if you do have those bans in place

01:57or also when it comes to the drought,

01:58if you're under voluntary

01:59or mandatory water restrictions as well.

02:02Future radar showing that we have still

02:05a little bit left when it comes to this storm.

02:07It's gonna move across the mid-Atlantic,

02:09bringing with it some drenching rain.

02:10So Washington DC,

02:12even down through Virginia Beach,

02:14the outer banks,

02:15you're really gonna get ripped here tonight,

02:17especially when it comes to the winds

02:19coming on shore.

02:20That's gonna create that hazard,

02:22especially around high tide.

02:24Here's the setup here Thursday night

02:26into Friday morning.

02:27That coastal flooding is gonna be a high risk.
