Under the theme 'Mud and Revelry' and at a cost of nine million dollars, the third edition of Tobago's October Carnival would be held this week, and according to Assistant Secretary for Tourism, Niall George, all systems are go, with the Soca Titans kicking things off on Wednesday night. 00:00we would be receiving one of our soka icons,
00:04Calypso Rose, tomorrow.
00:07After, there would be an honoring of both Calypso Rose
00:12and Lord Nelson on Friday.
00:14They would be honored by renaming streets in their names.
00:18And then we go into the thick of things,
00:21where we head into Monarchs of Mass,
00:24which would be the kings and queens of the band,
00:26and then we head into Murray's Life, and then to Juvie.
00:30Mr. George said room occupancy on the island
00:33is at this time 90 to 100% in some cases.
00:38TV6 made checks at some of the hotels
00:40and the guest houses in Tobago,
00:42including villas that are recording bumper occupancy levels.
00:47Folks, this carnival season is slated to be a bumper one.
00:51We have already received report from hoteliers
00:53that hotels are at almost 100% capacity.
00:59We are also receiving information
01:02about an increase in costume sales.
01:06And I can tell you that I am sure of that
01:08because I would have to be picking up family tomorrow
01:10so that we would be part of the carnival festivities.
01:14Security on the island remains paramount.
01:17I'm saying to each and everyone
01:19that we want this carnival to be an unprecedented one,
01:22but we also want safety to remain unprecedented.
01:27We would have done our last safety checks
01:29on last week, Friday,
01:31which would have been a tabletop exercise.
01:33We would have been presented with many scenarios
01:36and how they would be solved.
01:38We are saying to Tobagonians, have fun, have clean fun,
01:41and know that the background work would have been done
01:45so that to ensure that we have a very safe
01:48and successful carnival.
01:50On Friday, eight prominent Tobago icons would be recognized
01:54and streets named in their honor.
01:57They are Calypso Rose, Beryl Sinclair,
02:00Alan Richards, the late James A. A. Bigot,
02:03the late Dr. Jacob Delwitt Elder,
02:07the late Alcius Morian, and Edna Morian.
02:10The late Mighty Shadow, although not born in Tobago,
02:13is also being honored.
