00:00The family of a 76-year-old woman has lodged a complaint against a prominent private hospital
00:08in Kuala Lumpur alleging unethical practices by one of its specialists.
00:13The patient's daughter, April Liu, said her family was shocked that the doctor secured
00:17her mother's consent for general anesthesia just before surgery, despite the doctor being
00:22aware of her mother's medical history that could have rendered her unfit to sign the
00:26document without family consultation.
00:30Liu said the doctor failed to meet with the family before the surgery as promised, leaving
00:34them unable to discuss concerns or assess the risks of GA.
00:39The doctor allegedly obtained consent in the operation theater from the patient without
00:43any of her children present, which Liu described as unethical given her mother's vulnerable
00:48state.
00:49The family was also billed for consultations that never occurred, and charges were made
00:54to their credit card without consent, exceeding the pre-authorized amount the family had agreed
00:59to.
01:00The family is seeking an explanation of how the consent was obtained and how the hospital
01:04ensures that doctors do not bill for unperformed tasks.
01:08When contacted, the hospital told FMT that it would respond after getting feedback from
01:13the affected parties.
