00:00The Malaysian Medical Association warns that the purported spike in medical
00:04insurance premiums may result in further dependency on an already overburdened
00:09public health care system. It was reported on Tuesday that medical
00:13insurance premiums are expected to rise by 40% to 70% next year based on
00:17notices sent by insurance providers to policyholders, citing the rising cost of
00:22health care at private hospitals. MMA said medical insurance policyholders
00:26unable to afford significantly increased premiums or who have
00:30insufficient coverage may have no option but to turn to the public health care
00:34system for their health care needs. In a statement MMA president Dr. Kalwinder
00:39Singh Kaira said that while adjustments to insurance premiums may be needed to
00:43account for rising health care costs, it is crucial that these adjustments remain
00:47within a reasonable and affordable range. He added that insurance policies should
00:51be designed to accommodate all income groups to encourage financial preparedness.
