As the crime rate in Tobago increases, residents are concerned that in once tranquil Tobago, violence may become the new normal.

In an interview on Friday's Morning Edition, T.H.A. Minority leader Kelvon Morris spoke of this concern and the importance of politicians in Tobago tackling crime from a united front.
Transcript
00:00Mr. Morris described Anti-Crime, a meeting among key stakeholders in Tobago including
00:05the leadership of the THA and the minority, the police and other security agencies and
00:10leaders of the private sector, as encouraging and promising.
00:13He outlined the problem-solving approach that will be taken in making use of what they have,
00:18rather than delaying the progress and waiting for more resources, and why the THA resolved
00:23to supply the Coast Guard with two vessels for patrolling both the north coast and the
00:27west coast of Tobago.
00:29And therefore, what we got was the commitment and the recommitment to do all in our power
00:36to ensure that this very urgent issue can be adequately addressed.
00:41He highlighted the current goal.
00:43The focus immediate is about really suppressing, containing and identifying and rooting out
00:50those miscreants who are within the space causing this kind of upheaval.
00:56The rise in violent attacks has cast a shadow over the island paradise.
01:00The minority leaders said residents are shaken, concerned that this may be the new normal.
01:05Tobagoans are worried that perhaps this can be a new normal.
01:11And we, therefore, this is why we are really resolute in ensuring that this does not become
01:17the Tobago that we have to live in.
01:21Because for quite some time, we have always boasted that Tobago is quite safe, is a safe
01:29space and it is something we leverage to the world, that you can come to a little piece
01:35of paradise and enjoy it and know that wherever you go, you can feel safe.
01:41He said restoring Tobago to its previous safe haven image can only be achieved through unified
01:46leadership efforts.
01:47This dialogue is an apolitical dialogue in terms of crime.
01:53It should be all of our business and it should not be left to one party or one administration
02:00to say that is your problem, you deal with it.
02:03What we appreciate in Tobago is the fact that we are all saying that we are going to, on
02:09the matter of crime, speak from the same inbook, stand united and support one another.
02:16His message in the current climate remains one of hope.
02:19He said he continues to believe in the goodness of Tobagonians and the Tobago spirit and that
02:23this crime challenge can be overcome.
