A 62-year-old Moruga fisherman was killed in a boat accident which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The man had been fishing out at sea when his boat was hit by another vessel

Reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh was in Gran Chemin, Moruga, this morning and tells us more.

00:00For most of his 62 years, Leston Douglas had been a fisherman here in his hometown of Grand
00:07Chimay, Moruga, and fishing is what he was doing when he was killed on Thursday morning.
00:14According to police reports, Douglas, a father of four, and a female friend left on his pirogue
00:21at the Grand Chimay beach on Wednesday evening to fish during the night.
00:27But sometime before 3am, while in waters about two miles off Marac, another pirogue,
00:34captained by a man from Lansmetan Road, Moruga, crashed into their vessel.
00:40It began to sink, and the captain of the second boat took the couple onto his pirogue and
00:45back to shore.
00:46Emergency medical personnel were called out, but Douglas died shortly after reaching land.
00:53TV6 spoke with a friend and member of the Grand Chimay Fishing Association on Thursday.
01:13Mr Nicholas says it's not the first time a boat has been hit.
01:18He says he himself had to report an incident of his nets and traps being run over by neighbouring
01:25fishermen.
01:26He called on the government to complete the long overdue Grand Chimay fishing port and
01:52for the various arms of law enforcement to do better.
