00:00A boating accident near Centipede Island off Trinidad's northwestern tip claimed the life
00:06of eight-year-old Kayden Sandy.
00:08Kayden, a student of Mocorappo Boys' RSC School, was on a pirogue, perseverance, in the company
00:14of two adults and two other children, which had gone to lend assistance to another vessel
00:20which experienced mechanical problems, according to police.
00:25The occupants further told police near Centipede Island the rope connecting the both vessels
00:30burst, causing the both vessels to collide and overtune.
00:35A nearby vessel piloted by Robert Hadid Police say assisted and managed to rescue four of
00:41the five occupants from the water and took them to the Coast Guard base at Storbos Bay
00:46to seek medical attention.
00:48Coast Guard officers were dispatched and went to the area and managed to recover the body
00:53of the eight-year-old who was trapped beneath one of the boats.
00:57Although the police report suggested the young boy's father, Jules Sandy, was also on the
01:02boat, this is being disputed by the man himself when we visited his room on Lavatille Extension
01:09Road.
01:10He and the child's mother are separated.
01:12The mother lives in Tobago and, according to him, came to Trinidad this morning after
01:17learning of her son's death.
01:19Kayden, according to Jules, lives with his maternal grandmother.
01:49The visibly irate and grieving Sandy said he recently bought a life jacket for Kayden
02:14and had he been there, the tragedy could have been avoided.
02:17Jules said he suffered severe abdominal pains around the time he believes Kayden died.
02:23And when he got the call, he drove to Carinage not knowing where to go, but he was guided
02:28by a feeling that his son was calling out to him.
02:31Jules said the adults, who were with Kayden, have not spoken to him.
03:31The last he said he saw Kayden was just before school opened, when he took him for his very
03:50first haircut and got items for school.
04:20This is the second tragedy involving young children who were estranged from their fathers.
