00:09Alright, today we are going to talk about the effects of loneliness on your health.
00:13Americans are feeling lonelier than ever. A recent poll by the American Psychiatric
00:17Association shows that 30% of adults experience loneliness at least once a week,
00:21with 10% feeling lonely every day. Here's how loneliness impacts your health.
00:261. Heart disease. Loneliness and poor social connections can harm your heart.
00:30A study published in Nature Scientific Reports analyzed data from six studies with nearly 105,000
00:36participants. It found that people with weak social ties had a 16% higher risk of heart disease.
00:42This risk is even higher for older adults and retirees who often face more social isolation.
00:472. Other health issues. Loneliness contributes to various health problems. For older adults,
00:52it can lead to dementia, slower walking, and reduced ability to care for themselves.
00:57It's also linked to earlier death. Young people aren't spared,
01:00loneliness can cause headaches, stomach aches, sleep problems, and excessive internet use.
01:05Brain studies show that loneliness alters brain areas related to cognition,
01:09stress, and emotions and is associated with biological markers for Alzheimer's disease.
01:14What can we do about it? Recognizing loneliness is a serious issue.
01:17The U.S. Surgeon General suggests several actions, such as
01:21build community spaces like parks and libraries, enact policies such as paid family leave to
01:26strengthen family bonds, and have health providers screen for social isolation and
01:30intervene when needed. The CDC also offers practical tips for individuals, including
01:35start conversations with friends, neighbors, and co-workers, use social media to interact,
01:40not just browse, volunteer in your community, and discuss your feelings with your healthcare
01:45provider. Loneliness is a growing problem worldwide, linked to many health issues,
01:49including increased cardiovascular risk. Taking action against loneliness can improve
01:54your health and well-being. Stay connected, seek support,
01:57and remember that building relationships is essential for a healthier, happier life.
