00:00 We just want to make a public appeal for legislation. Legislation that will be
00:04 able to treat you know that having laws for persons with disabilities as I
00:08 released as I said physical infrastructure, transportation, housing,
00:12 all the amenities that will fall under that umbrella so that it will give
00:16 personal disability some level of inclusivity and equity where we can be
00:20 able to function effectively and contribute positively to the general
00:24 society. Mr. Thomas spoke with TV6 News at the Scarborough Esplanade on Thursday
00:30 during a distribution of hampers for the disabled community but difficulties with
00:36 transportation to the event kept some people away.
00:40 Hollis Kenneth Jacobs said not enough is being done to ensure inclusiveness of
00:47 disabled people in the society. Well the first thing I would like to see implemented is
00:53 they need to have more special ed teachers. They don't have that. I
00:59 personally inquired about some and the return I got was poor, poor, poor.
01:05 Right so they need to do that first and then make the schools more accessible
01:10 for children or people with wheelchairs, crutches or walkers or who just can't
01:16 move around as freely as able-bodied people. We also caught up with Kizzy Kerr
01:21 and her twin girls. The family from Tobago East is hoping that more could be
01:27 done in the education system to accommodate those with special needs.
01:32 More support for especially children in the schools. Disabled People's
01:40 International is seeking to have office space in Scarborough to support
01:44 residents in Tobago. Right now we're working on trying to get an office space you
01:50 know somewhere around town where it's accessible for persons that they can come and have
01:56 their concerns and who are having certain problems that we need a wheelchair, who
02:00 need this you know so these are some of the things that we want to do to try to
02:04 have an office space so instead of everybody running to social services
02:07 come to us and we will take up take your message to the social services and
02:12 concerns and try to see how best we could get things up and running.
