A spell of rain, ice and snow through midweek will be the first of many storms expected to hit the West Coast into next week.
Transcript
00:00 Wet and stormy has been the name of
00:02 the game across the West Coast
00:04 over the past two months,
00:05 but now we're adding wet,
00:07 stormy and wintry as the words
00:08 to describe this week.
00:10 And here's how it begins across I5 in Oregon.
00:12 We have some problems today.
00:14 Portland towards Salem, Eugene.
00:15 There's some icing on the way.
00:17 We do have an ice storm that's
00:19 going to impact large parts of Oregon,
00:21 especially as you're looking
00:22 West of the Cascades.
00:23 Little further South into Medford.
00:24 It's more in the way of rain,
00:26 not quite cold enough for ice to be a problem,
00:29 but we're still concerned here.
00:31 As we look up I5, look at the map.
00:33 You can see the two areas of pink.
00:35 The first one a little bit lighter,
00:37 a little bit brighter all the way up
00:39 and down I5 not just for Oregon,
00:40 but up toward, let's say Seattle,
00:42 Tacoma and even into Vancouver.
00:43 As you cross the border to
00:45 the Great White North here,
00:46 we do have that potential for roads
00:48 to get really icy and slick,
00:49 so take it easy or more.
00:51 So if you can stay home,
00:53 I highly suggest it.
00:54 That goes double even triple for
00:55 cities like Portland where we have
00:57 significant icing possible and just
00:58 look at your Accuweather Wintercast.
01:00 Remember,
01:00 Wintercast isn't just for snow,
01:02 it's for all winter weather.
01:03 It's a product of not just the
01:05 Accuweather app and Accuweather.com,
01:06 but also here on the Accuweather
01:07 network to 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch or
01:09 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch I should say of
01:11 ice expected in Portland,
01:13 Oregon between 4:00 PM on Tuesday
01:14 and midnight as we get to Wednesday.
01:16 And while you might be saying that's it,
01:18 half an inch, oh my friends,
01:19 it's not like snow when you get ice,
01:21 you get half an inch of ice.
01:23 That's a tremendous amount.
01:24 All it takes is really a trace for
01:26 things to get bad on the roads.
01:28 And we're talking about 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
01:30 Not only will the roads be
01:31 nearly impossible to navigate,
01:32 but you're also having all that
01:34 ice weighing down power lines.
01:35 So power outages are a concern as well.
01:37 Make sure to charge your electronics
01:38 and know where your local shelters
01:40 are in case your power goes out.
01:41 It's going to be cold,
01:43 not just today, but tonight too.
01:44 Here's the storm as it continues
01:45 its way in into Wednesday.
01:47 More in the way of not just that
01:48 icing potential that wintery mixing
01:50 as we look across I-5 and even
01:51 into parts of the Yakima Valley
01:53 into the Umatilla Valley.
01:54 The Willamette Valley too,
01:54 but more in the way of snow as we
01:56 get back toward the northern Rockies
01:58 and into parts of Western Montana.
01:59 Temperatures really starting to
02:00 dip as we get later into the week.
02:02 Look at Helena.
02:03 We go from 23,
02:04 which isn't all that warm to begin
02:05 with to 6 degrees on Thursday.
02:08 That's not a typo,
02:08 that's just the cold air coming
02:09 on in from the north.
02:10 We do warm up a little by Friday,
02:12 but it's all relative, right?
02:14 21 degrees isn't exactly going to
02:15 get you sunbathing anytime soon.
02:17 Make sure you are saying again,
02:18 very much aware of the icing potential
02:20 today, tonight and early tomorrow
02:22 morning in cities like Portland.
02:24 As for Seattle,
02:25 it's more in the way of rain on the way,
02:26 so our temperatures finally rebound
02:28 into this coming weekend.
