00:00 Just in the last hour or so, Stephen Miles has been officially endorsed as Queensland's
00:06 next Premier following this party room meeting of Labor MPs and Cameron Dick, who's the Treasurer,
00:12 will serve as his deputy.
00:15 They were both elected unopposed and received unanimous support, we're told.
00:20 Emerging from the meeting today, Mr Miles says he's going to appoint five new ministers
00:26 and this, he says, is the highest number of new ministers since Labor came to government
00:30 in 2015.
00:32 And those new ministers, we're told, are Nicky Boyd, Bart Mellish, Lance McCallum, Michael
00:36 Healey and Cherise Mullin.
00:38 And we're waiting to see what kind of portfolios they will be appointed to.
00:42 Mr Miles also confirmed, along with Ms Palaszczuk leaving Cabinet, there'll be three other ministers
00:48 who will also be departing.
00:50 The Transport Minister, the Child Safety Minister and the Tourism Minister.
00:55 And Mr Miles and Mr Dick will be sworn into their new roles at Government House this afternoon.
01:01 Now Kate, just remind us what has been Stephen Miles' path to politics and now, of course,
01:07 this role as Premier.
01:10 Well Mr Miles has, I guess, working class roots.
01:13 His father was a fitter at the cannery, his mum was a workplace health and safety inspector
01:18 and he joined the Labor Party while still in high school.
01:21 He was the first in his family to go to university and that was thanks to a scholarship from
01:26 former Queensland Premier Wayne Goss.
01:29 He also then worked at the unions and was elected in 2015, taking on the portfolio of
01:35 Environment Minister before being appointed as the Health Minister in 2017 and ultimately
01:41 being elevated to Deputy Premier in 2020.
01:44 Now he has been in high profile roles in the last few years but he has said today that
01:50 he wants to take the time to introduce himself more properly to Queenslanders and this is
01:55 what he had to say a short time ago.
01:57 I haven't spent much time talking about myself.
02:00 I've talked about the issues we were working on and how they affect Queensland and Queenslanders
02:05 and so I'll take some time this afternoon to introduce myself and my family to Queenslanders
02:12 and then I will demonstrate to them how I intend to lead with what I do more than what
02:18 I say.
02:19 And that's Stephen Miles who's going to be Queensland's next Premier after being officially
02:24 endorsed by Labor MPs at a meeting this morning with Cameron Dick, the Treasurer, to serve
02:30 as his Deputy.
