AFL is the lifeblood of many remote Aboriginal communities but in Borroloola soccer is the word. It's home to the Northern Territory's newest team, The Borroloola Strikers, full of women ready to make their debut on a national field.

00:06Yeah, and it's the most popular sport in Borralula and everyone, every kid enjoyed it.
00:14Love playing soccer there.
00:16It's been years since the East Arnhem community has had a women's team.
00:20And while they've only been playing for a few months, the freshly minted Borralula strikers are already kicking goals.
00:30I like playing soccer to make my family proud and happy to become a soccer player.
00:39The girls' ages range from 14 to early 30s.
00:42But for all players, it's a chance to reset.
00:45Most of these young girls, they enjoy playing soccer.
00:49Just get away from everything else around them and they can just come play soccer where they can have a yarn with each other and play sport and be happy with one another.
00:59There may not be an easy path from Borralula to the big leagues now, but that's changing.
01:06First and foremost, just making sure that they just keep enjoying the game and loving the game.
01:10And through that, obviously identifying the players that want to take it to that next level and create their pathways for them.
01:16Borralula strikers are making their interstate debut next week at the First Nations Football Festival.
01:23They're excited to play some interstate matches, but more importantly, to meet other young women who are excited to kick the same goals.
01:31The problem is going to be putting boots on them and keeping the boots on them, so that's going to be the issue.
