00:09Evandale residents love their village for its character.
00:13But for the last seven years, many have worried plans for a new suburb could threaten that identity.
00:19If its integrity started to be compromised, I would definitely think about moving away.
00:24In 2018, Sydney-based company Traders in Purple proposed a 240-hectare housing development on agricultural land on Evandale's northern fringe.
00:35The company, which has previously developed housing at Kingston in the state's south, said it would support young families and the local school.
00:44But despite Tasmania's housing shortage, the idea faced strong opposition.
00:49And we have quite a bit of housing happening in our municipality at the moment.
00:53So the community was feeling that this extra expansion outside of the town of Evandale was not needed at the moment.
01:03It's about 130% bigger than the current footprint of the village, so it really is massive.
01:09Traders in Purple put their Evandale land on the market earlier this year.
01:13But they also put forward a smaller development proposal of 263 lots over 80 hectares.
01:20The project would first require their land to be rezoned.
01:25Last month, the Northern Midlands Council refused to initiate that process due to a number of concerns.
01:32It was a historic village and the fact that the trucks would need to drive through the village.
01:36Traders in Purple says it was disappointed with the council's decision.
01:40It says the new development would have met community expectations with new housing that preserves the unique village character of Evandale.
01:49Traders in Purple has asked the Tasmanian Planning Commission to review the council's recent decision.
01:55A ruling is expected within a month.
