00:00 Ladies and gentlemen, and you know, he ended up with the Redskins/Commanders.
00:08 They were the Redskins back then, we'll call it that.
00:10 But your records, 25,000 yards in essence, 3,602 completions, and on and on, obviously
00:19 the Washington Super Bowl victory over the Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII and the MVP.
00:26 You look at all those, and 163 consecutive games before the hit, what are you most proud
00:32 of?
00:33 Of the on football stuff?
00:37 Beyond football?
00:38 No, the on football.
00:39 You know, really, it's a great, the thing that I'm singularly most proud of is I played
00:45 in 163 consecutive football games.
00:47 I never missed a day of work.
00:49 All the years I played, with broken collarbones, broken ribs, broken hands, whether I was a
00:55 punt returner, which I started my career, first two years in professional football as,
01:00 and then went on as a holder, and like I say, then became a quarterback.
01:05 But I prided myself on the fact that I showed up for work every day.
01:09 And I contend this, Rick, I see so many young guys today do things that put themselves in
01:16 harm's way that they can't continue to play in practice.
01:19 If you want to get better at anything, you have to show up every day, and you have to
01:24 learn something every day.
01:25 My favorite saying is, "The day you stop learning is the day you stop living."
01:29 And for me, the fact that I was able to show up every day, I think, gave me a chance to
01:33 be able to grow at the position, gave me a chance to grow as a person, gave me a chance
01:37 to grow as a quarterback.
01:39 I'll give you a classic example.
01:40 Zach Wilson, who's not really, who's not dressing now for the Jets.
01:46 Beginning of the season, first preseason game, he's two yards from the sidelines, and instead
01:50 of running out of bounds, now keep in mind, he's the starting quarterback.
01:53 He's the guy.
01:55 He cuts back up to try and pick up two more yards in the first preseason game, hurts his
02:00 knee and he's gone for almost a month.
02:02 I mean, these are the kind of things that you try and impress on young guys, is you
02:08 being out there, learning the position on a daily basis, is so vital and important to
02:13 you having longevity in this game.
02:16 There's enough, there are enough people going to hit you.
02:18 There's no reason to go out and try and get people to hit you.
02:21 Now you see guys sliding all the time, protecting themselves.
02:23 They understand, but here was a young guy who was going to pick up a few more yards
02:27 in a preseason game when you are the guy.
02:31 And those are the things that I'm sure he's going to learn going forward now, but that
02:35 set him back and so now he's not even dressing.
02:38 Nope.
02:39 (upbeat music)
02:41 (bells chiming)
