00:00Okay, so the Dolphins making a lot of news because we sort of know where they're headed, Jacob, right? Like
00:05they're headed in a transition season at the best. At worst, it's a rebuild. And they have the Packers staff
00:12basically on board in Miami now, including their GM.
00:14And so they opt to say farewell to Tua Tungavailoa, who we'll get to in a minute, and sign Malik
00:20Willis, who, look, I mean, he did look good as a backup. We literally have no idea how he will
00:28do starting for 16, 17 games in the NFL season, which honestly speaks to only $45 million guaranteed for him.
00:37I mean, think about it. That's usually money for one season of a guaranteed quarterback. But I think that this
00:43works out real well, Jacob, for the Dolphins to take a shot.
00:47And I think when Willis looked around the league, he probably thought to himself, you know something? If I don't
00:51sign here, I'm probably not guaranteed to start anywhere. So good fit here for both.
00:57Absolutely. It just seemed like the best opportunity for Willis, as you alluded to. Look, the Dolphins are rebuilding. They're
01:04going to have to build up the roster around him.
01:06But, you know, you go in there, he has familiarity with the coach and the general manager, having come from
01:11the Packers. And how robust was the market going to be for him?
01:16Yes, he has a lot of upside. He has elite accuracy and excellent mobility that he showed off in Green
01:21Bay, threw six touchdowns, no interceptions during his time with the Packers.
01:25So, you know, there's a lot to like about him. But at the same time, he's only got six career
01:30starts under his belt across four seasons.
01:32So there's a tiny sample size here. As you mentioned, he's going to have to start 16, 17 games with
01:38the Dolphins.
01:39And we just don't know how that's going to go. So I think this sort of rare mid-tier quarterback
01:44deal makes sense for both parties.
01:46It's short term enough that if the Dolphins, you know, if Willis doesn't pan out, they can move on from
01:50him without taking too significant of a cap penalty as they continue to rebuild their roster.
01:55And for Willis's purposes, he's locking in that $45 million. That's all his. That's great for him.
02:01And if he plays well, a couple years from now, he's going to have the opportunity to sign a more
02:06lucrative extension.
02:07And he'll still be young. I think he's only going to be 27 this upcoming season.
02:11So still a lot of upside. There's a lot to like about this deal for both parties.
02:16I just think it was the most sensible fit. You could have made a case, hey, maybe you would go
02:19to Arizona.
02:20But with them seemingly ready to roll with Jacoby Brissett as they continue to build up the roster, Miami was
02:26really the best fit for Willis.
02:28So I'm excited to see how this pans out. I really liked what I saw out of him in Green
02:31Bay.
02:32And we'll see if he can keep that going as he gets more and more and more snaps down in
02:36Miami.
