Five people were inducted into St. Mary's College's Hall of Fame, this week.

Roman Catholic Archbishop Jason Gordon, in his feature address, said it has become harder for teachers to hold the attention of students.

And, that a new era has called the value of education into question.

00:00 Under the theme, "The importance of a relevant education system in forging an effective nation,"
00:06 Archbishop Jason Gordon reminded the audience that change is constant and ever so needed
00:12 within the system.
00:13 He said in this era of change, a lot of what we knew and trusted before has been called
00:19 into question.
00:20 The temptation is to try to hold on to a narrow view of what was and try to hold it in the
00:28 current era and to ensure that somehow it remains entrenched.
00:34 But there's an opportunity here, and I think the opportunity is to open our imagination
00:40 and to see education from new perspectives and having a new mandate.
00:48 He added that the advancement of technology and the failure of the system continue to
00:53 be a problem.
00:54 And we have to ask ourselves, what is the value of education when content is so readily
01:03 available on the net to everyone?
01:09 But that's not the deepest problem.
01:13 The problem that we have is that we have analog natives designing and teaching and educating
01:23 digital natives in a 19th century classroom.
01:28 The Archbishop said that young men are of a particular concern to the Catholic Church,
01:33 and more attention needs to be paid to getting them more involved and engaged in productive
01:37 activities that would produce responsible citizens.
01:42 We need our young men engaged in becoming a man.
01:47 We need them engaged in becoming a man of faith.
01:50 We need them engaged in becoming a great citizen of this beautiful and wonderful twin island
01:56 Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
01:59 And this is not business as usual.
02:03 The five inductees into the Hall of Fame are the late Louis Patrick Arnold, the late Dr.
02:09 Samuel Frank Gurlala, Bishop Clyde Harvey, Carlos He Hung, and the late Professor Julian
02:17 Kenney.
02:19 The third induction ceremony included a packed program which was chaired by Dr. Terence Farrell.
02:24 Bishop Clyde Harvey responded on behalf of the inductees, offered thanks, and gave some
02:30 advice to the committee.
02:32 It is amazing to Carlos and myself that we should be inducted into the St. Mary's College
02:39 Hall of Fame by two Fatima Old Boys.
02:44 I don't understand that at all.
02:49 So Alumni Foundation, if you want me to respect your title, for God's sake invite me back
02:55 here to be inducted into the St. Mary's College Hall of Fame by two St. Mary's Boys.
03:00 Amen.
