00:00Videos of flooding at St. George's College in Barataria surfaced on social
00:04media following heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon. Some students were
00:09seen standing in flood water while others stood on top of chairs to avoid
00:13the water. Students also looked on at the situation from inside their
00:17classrooms. A video of a leaky roof at the school was also shared on social
00:22media. Well in response, Minister of Education Dr. Nehaan Gadsby-Dalhi told
00:27TV6 quote, it's not unusual in the rainy season for heavy sustained rainfall to
00:33cause flooding at some schools. It is a challenge the ministry deals with from
00:38time to time during the rainy season. Today, flooding was experienced at St.
00:43George's College and also at Mount Hope Secondary. The Facilities Department
00:48will liaise with the schools to determine if assistance is required for
00:51cleanup as has been required at schools in some instances. They will also
00:56determine possible causes and mitigation strategies. In fact, in 2022
01:02when St. George's was temporarily relocated to UTT, the ministry had to
01:07intervene in a similar flooding situation at that campus. So yes,
01:11flooding is one of the challenges with school operation in the rainy season and
01:16the relevant department of the ministry will deal with it as is usual end quote.
01:22However, Tutor President Martin Lumpkin says a lot of money was spent on the
01:27school to have it reopened for the new academic year. What is even more obscene
01:32is the fact that there was this huge hype and public relations in the
01:40reopening of the school which was clearly not ready for the occupation by
01:48staff and students. We also understand that this ceiling in the hall which
01:57cost taxpayers quite a tidy sum of money shows signs of leaking. Tutor also claims
02:05there are electrical and air conditioning woes at the school and is
02:08calling on the ministry to properly deal with the concerns raised. When TV6
02:14visited St. George's College, we uncovered another issue at the school.
02:18According to parents, this garbage pile up at the school has been there for some
02:23time and is a serious concern to them. What is even worse, the health hazard is
02:29situated at a main gate that students use to access the school. Parents are
02:34calling on the authorities to clean up its act and maintain a healthy
02:38environment for the students. Akshaya Galstan, TV6 News.
