We asked people in Lancashire if they liked the Government's proposals laid out in the King's Speech 2023.

00:00 I'm impressed with some things but I'm not impressed with certain things as well. I think
00:07 I agree with the murderers' sentiment, like staying till life ends. I do think that at
00:14 some point we became too lenient with murderers.
00:21 One of the major social changes was that they're going to add a gradient age increase on when
00:26 you can buy tobacco.
00:27 I feel like that's really going to constrain people's liberties and people's rights. I
00:36 feel like smoking is something that, yes, I'm a medical student so I definitely understand
00:40 the government not wanting people to smoke as much because of the health implications.
00:47 But I do also feel like people should have the knowledge. There's a lot of public health
00:53 campaigns out there to educate people on the current hazards and the current implications
00:57 of health. But people, like an adult, should have that option to make that decision. And
01:04 yes, sometimes we do make bad decisions and we know that it's not good for us. But as
01:08 long as you have the mental capacity to make that decision, whether it's an unwise decision
01:12 or not, we should still be giving that right.
01:15 I think what should be put more in place is help to help people that have smoking related
01:27 complications. But I just feel like it's unfair to keep raising it and raising it because
01:32 you're going to get to a point where a 30 year old man can go to a shop and buy a cigarette
01:37 and I just feel like you're treating him as a child, which he's not. So I feel like it's
01:43 something that I understand where they're coming from. I totally understand that. I'm
01:47 currently in the medical field, so I totally understand that bit. But it's also the social
01:53 care part of it as well, where you don't want them taking people's liberties and people's
01:57 rights off them as well, because that's becoming a bit of a dictatorship and that's not what
02:02 we stand for in a democracy. So I do think there should be something in place, but I
02:07 don't think it should be that harsh.
02:09 I wish they focused a lot, or focused more on the current cost of living, because things
02:14 have been very hard for the general public. So I wish that they actually did a bit more,
02:20 or put a bit, things in place to help more people. Because I feel like people already
02:26 have this idea of the monarchy always taken from people, so I feel like if they did put
02:33 something in there to give, I think that would have definitely helped their image a lot more.
02:38 I like the one about the stricter sentences, especially for rapists, because a lot of rapists
02:43 will go out and they will commit the same crime again whilst on good behaviour. I think
02:47 that's something that personally for me means a lot, because I know some people who have
02:52 been affected by that. Things like the tobacco law, probably not as... it probably doesn't
02:59 mean as much to me because I haven't been affected by it, but I can understand people's
03:02 point of view, because of the amount of people that are dying from, say, lung cancer or having
03:07 effects from smoking tobacco as an effect on their health, so I can understand that.
03:12 I think perhaps they need to focus on more important laws, such as murder and things
03:19 like that, and trying to get more mental health getting done as well. I think that things
03:24 like tobacco isn't really the stuff of the priority.
03:28 Could you talk about anything you wish the government focused on in the following year?
03:33 I think there could be more laws for trespassing, harassment, stalking. I know that a lot of
03:39 my friends have had those issues, and because it's not been... for a long period of time,
03:45 it's just been swept over by the police, and I think that things like that could be taken
03:48 more seriously, especially with young women, because young women are afraid to walk at
03:54 night, and I think there should be more security around darker areas, more alleyways and things
03:58 like that, and I think that should be something that the government takes seriously.
04:02 Is there anything else that you wish you had heard?
04:05 I think they should make sure that they put more focus onto these laws, because you mean
04:11 myself, I'm not on social media, so I haven't heard a lot about it, and it hasn't been really
04:16 on the news a lot to allow people to have their say and to talk about it, so I think
04:21 more media coverage would be more helpful for young people like me.
04:24 Do you feel like the government's plans then feel quite distant to the regular person?
04:28 Yeah, I think that they don't make a lot of what they plan to do public so people can
04:33 give their opinion on it and they can see just how much it affects the general public,
04:38 because they might not be suffering from those same experiences the general public is, so
04:43 they might not understand the emotional side of it more than the financial side of it,
04:48 they might be putting more money into a specific sector to put a law against it whilst not
04:51 understanding that there's less media coverage prospects that they could be focusing on as well.
