00:00 So speaking of statistics, my sister is a orthopedic surgeon and recently told me about
00:05 a study where the results found that patients have better outcomes with female surgeons.
00:11 In thinking back on your own healthcare experiences, have you found that you've received better
00:16 treatment from female providers?
00:20 That's an interesting question.
00:22 I will say that ultimately my decision to divest from the traditional medical system
00:32 by working with black midwives, Kindred Space LA, was one of the most, was like a life-changing
00:45 decision for me.
00:47 It was the most empowering experience of my life.
00:52 I would say working with those black women reinforced just how important it is to find
00:59 healthcare providers that make you feel safe and seen and heard and believed and listened
01:06 to.
01:07 I mean, it's incredibly important to find that in your healthcare provider, whether
01:14 that's a man or a woman.
01:17 I've experienced, if I'm honest, I've experienced some pretty unacceptable negligence from both
01:27 men and women physicians.
01:30 And I actually sought out female physicians.
01:34 I really prioritized black physicians throughout my pregnancy journey.
01:42 And I think that the issue is within the medical system.
01:46 I think that we're in better hands.
01:50 There's probably, to your point that you have the stats, you're probably in better hands
01:56 in terms of the stats or the ratio, if you can find a female healthcare provider.
02:04 But I don't think that, I think that simplifies the issue.
02:08 I think that this is a deeply systemic issue.
02:11 And if you have been trained in this system, I think anyone can fall victim to some of
02:23 this conditioning that is deeply racist.
02:27 And beyond racist, I think just the system isn't set up for compassionate care.
02:33 It just isn't.
02:34 It's set up to put the priority on profits over patients.
02:39 So I know that's a long-winded answer, but I don't want to, I had to be honest that I've
02:45 experienced not great care from both.
