00:05 Grocery stores may close in the hours before a tropical storm or hurricane impacts your area.
00:10 Depending on how intense the storm is, stores may be closed for many days after the wind and rain pass.
00:16 It's crucial to have enough food to survive the storm, so how should you prepare?
00:20 Other than prescription medications, the most important item to have during a hurricane is water.
00:26 Humans can survive for nearly three weeks without food, but only three days without water.
00:31 Have one to two gallons of water per day per person, and a method of purifying water if more is needed.
00:37 Next, gradually create an emergency supply of non-perishable and easily transportable food.
00:43 Canned foods like tuna or those in plastic jars like peanut butter contain essential fats and proteins.
00:49 Canned vegetables and fruits contain essential sugars and vitamins.
00:53 Don't forget snacks like trail mix or candy that you can enjoy between meals of non-perishable food.
00:58 Non-perishable canned goods lack the nutrients of fresh foods,
01:02 so keep a supply of multivitamins to maintain a nutritional balance.
01:06 And also make sure to keep a stock of spices like pepper, sugar, and salt to add flavor to food if bland.
01:13 Lastly, do not forget to plan for pets, children, and infants or those with dietary needs.
01:18 All foods should be stored in watertight, transportable containers so you can bring it with you to a shelter if needed.
