Nicola Elliott, the founder of a British jam manufacturer, reacts to energy companies announcing record profits. British Gas owner Centrica revealed that earnings at its retail supplier business soared by nearly 900%. Nicola thinks that this is “unethical”, saying: “We’re nowhere near making that kind of profit in our business, so why should they take all of the money and take it away from small businesses.” Report by Covellm. 00:00 So our energy bills have gone from about £400 a month last year up to around £1,700 a month
00:13 at the moment. So it's a huge increase, one that we hadn't planned for. We're basically
00:19 having to use money that we had planned to put towards employing another person instead
00:24 to pay our energy bills. So yeah, it's a huge increase for us as a small business.
00:30 Yeah, so we've had to put our jam prices up. We had to put them up back in January
00:35 by an average of 7-8% and then it looks like we're going to have to put them up again
00:39 in the next few months as well because as well as the energy prices increasing, all
00:44 of our ingredient packaging, everything we use, the price has increased because they're
00:49 obviously also getting increases at their end. It feels quite unethical that the energy
00:54 companies are making so much profits. We're nowhere near making that kind of profit in
00:59 our business, so why should they take all the money and take it away from small businesses
01:04 and ultimately the end consumer?
