Over 300,000 public teachers have gone out on strike after failed negotiations with the Colombian government over working conditions. The educators charge that they are the worst-paid teachers in South America with an average wage between $500 and $800 dollars a month. They denounce the government ploy of highlighting children’s right to a decent education when in fact, government policies re denying them this right. They say that today’s march is only the beginning of an indefinite strike to demand a proper public education system with a proper budget and proper working conditions for the teachers.
