Genesis Chapter 25 records the final years of Abraham, the genealogy of Ishmael, and the birth of Esau and Jacob.
Abraham takes another wife, Keturah, and she bears him sons. He gives gifts to the sons of his concubines and sends them away eastward, but he gives all that he has to Isaac. Abraham dies at one hundred and seventy-five years old and is buried by Isaac and Ishmael in the cave of Machpelah. The chapter lists the sons of Ishmael. Isaac is forty years old when he takes Rebekah as wife. She conceives twins. The children struggle within her. The Lord tells her that two nations are in her womb and that the older shall serve the younger. Esau is born first, red and hairy; Jacob is born grasping Esau’s heel. When the boys grow up, Esau is a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob is a quiet man, dwelling in tents. One day Esau comes in exhausted and sells his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of red stew.
