Transcript
00:00Hey everyone, it's me Jen and welcome back. Today I'm at BookSoup, which is one of LA's most legendary bookstores
00:06and I'll be showing you a few of my favorite books. Let's go!
00:18So the first book I've picked out for you is
00:21Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. He is one of my favorite authors by far because although he has
00:28usually bizarre and very surreal plot lines, his writing is really crisp and clever and it just really sunk into
00:35my soul.
00:35And I feel like I read this book at the right time in my life because the main character is
00:40kind of searching,
00:41discovering, and finding out what he's missing in his life and that's kind of what I was when I was
00:46in my early 20s
00:47and so this book really hit home. If you're into just really mind-bending, surreal works of art, definitely check
00:54them out.
00:57My second book is 1984 by George Orwell and this is a book that's usually assigned in high school,
01:03so if you are assigned to it, definitely enjoy it. This book is about a dystopia and I love reading
01:09about them
01:09because I find them very fascinating. And in this world, there is no individuality, no rights, you can't even think
01:16the way you want and if you are caught disobeying, the thought police will get you. If you want to
01:22find out more about it,
01:23definitely give it a read. I think reading this book can be appreciated having the freedom to express myself
01:28in whatever way I want and I think people forget that that's a luxury to have.
01:36My last book is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and I've spoken about this book before,
01:42but I'm just really adamant of having everyone read it at least once. Of course, this book is about another
01:47dystopia, but this time it's kind of like a feminist nightmare. In this book, women have no rights at
01:53all and the main character is named Offred, so it's Offred, so she doesn't even have a real name anymore
02:00and her only role in society is to reproduce and it's pretty dark. The storyline just follows her
02:07experiences and what she has to do and this book is pretty creepy because if women didn't take a stand
02:12for
02:12rights, this is something that could potentially happen, so it's something that men and women
02:17should all read at least once. I had so much fun here at BookSoup telling you guys some of my
02:23favorite
02:23books I've had. I hope this inspired you to open up a book and get lost in the world of
02:28reading.
