00:00Hey everyone, it's me Jen and welcome back. Today I'm at BookSoup which is one of
00:04LA's most legendary bookstores and I'll be showing you a few of my favorite books.
00:08Let's go!
00:18So the first book I picked out for you is
00:21Cough on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. He is one of my favorite authors by far
00:26because although he has usually bizarre and very surreal plot lines, his writing
00:32is really crisp and clever and it just really sunk into my soul. And I feel like I read this
00:37book at the right time in my life because the main character is kind of searching and discovering
00:42and finding out what he's missing in his life and that's kind of what I was when I was in
00:46my early
00:4720s and so this book really hit home. If you're into just really mind-bending, surreal works of art,
00:54definitely check them out. My second book is 1984 by George Orwell and this is a book that's
01:01usually assigned in high school so if you are assigned to it, definitely enjoy it. This book
01:07is about a dystopia and I love reading about them because I find them very fascinating and in this
01:12world there is no individuality, no rights, you can't even think the way you want and if you are
01:19caught disobeying, the thought police will get you. If you want to find out more about it,
01:23definitely give it a read. I think reading this book can be appreciate having the freedom to
01:27express myself in whatever way I want and I think people forget that that's a luxury to have.
01:36My last book is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and I've spoken about this book before
01:41but I'm just really adamant of having everyone read it at least once. Of course this book is about
01:47another dystopia but this time it's kind of like a feminist nightmare. In this book women have no
01:52rights at all and the main character is named Offred so it's Offred so she doesn't even have a real
01:59name
01:59anymore and her only role in society is to reproduce and it's pretty dark. The storyline just follows her
02:07experiences and what she has to do and this book is pretty creepy because if women didn't take a stand
02:12for their rights this is something that could potentially happen so it's something that men
02:16and women should all read at least once. I had so much fun here at BookSoup telling you guys some
02:23of
02:23my favorite books I've had. I hope this inspired you to open up a book and get lost in the
02:27world of
02:28reading. If you enjoyed this episode please subscribe to Reply29 and I'll see you next Monday. Bye!
