00:03ladies and gentlemen Gwyneth Paltrow I'm told that even though this is like we have all the
00:10tech brilliance in the world there's no teleprompter so I'm gonna completely nerd
00:15out and hold my my paper like it's 1998 I'm here because I was asked to come and speak I
00:25have a
00:26little website that I started called goop.com I was speaking to a journalist from Recode the
00:34other day Nelly and in the course of our discussion she asked me specifically what
00:38it's like to be a subject of people's opinions on this level interestingly it starts with an
00:45objectification and a dehumanization Facebook actually you know started in a way in their
00:52first incarnation as a place to judge women on their pulchritude or lack of it the lack of empathy
01:01that is created when people can anonymously opine about the looks or actions of others has been you
01:09know very well studied at this point it's where we are in our our culture yes it does worry me
01:15for the
01:16development of my kids and the next generation that people can be so cruel and without experiencing
01:23the consequences of being that cruel face-to-face you know celebrities we've always gotten stones
01:30thrown at us and you know for good reason we're annoying and you know we we some of us look
01:38okay we look
01:39like we have money we you know our lives seem great and I thought it was maybe a contemporary
01:46phenomenon but it's not you know when you go back through history all the way through history it's
01:50always happened you know could be to a spiritual leader to Katherine Hepburn it's this everybody
01:56takes shit it's just the way it is it's no accident that as the internet grows and all of the
02:01voices
02:01get softer and softer because there's just so many of them and there is more and more content to distract
02:07us and take our focus off our own less than pleasant day or relationship or job problems we're drawn to
02:15authenticity that perhaps the internet has been brought to us as a test in our emotional evolution
02:24to not be reactive to not see someone in a dress you don't like and instead of writing from user
02:32name
02:33like shite bomber 207 you know who does this fat bitch think she is or whatever even though you
02:42might really feel that way just stopping and saying to yourself I wonder what this image represents to
02:50me that I would feel such a surge of anger for me I don't ever expect my venture goop.com
03:00to contribute
03:01and advance the collective you know code base or redefine social selling no don't count us out but
03:10I do expect to be a microcosm of what I've discussed here today I expect us to as we grow
03:16to know who we
03:17are to continue to do what we're doing with utmost authenticity I expect us to be ourselves no matter what
03:25their reaction to have strength to know that it's okay to be at once irreverent and practical to be
03:32sisters and friends and mothers while being articulate and strong to make and find good shit and share it
03:39with you and above all to not give a fuck if the Facebook guys think we're hot more not so
03:47thank you
